Lifestyle and Nutrition Coaching
We offer a six-month holistic health program that will radically change your view on food and nutrition. The program is typically implemented across six months, because true change never happens quickly and involves a gradual transition from old habits to newer, healthier ways. The program will help balance all aspects of your life: career, relationships, exercise, spirituality, and food. Come explore if this program is right for you or someone in your life. The initial consultation will provide valuable information to help on your path to good health and better eating.

Tired of taking ten different kinds of vitamins? How about just one that is custom made for your needs only? Wouldn't it be great to take a stress test to see how our adrenal glands perform in crisis? Or find out what foods we are allergic to? Or how strong our bones are? Or how well our digestive enzymes are working?  Or whether we should eat more or less protein and carbohydrates based on insulin resistance?

Without the high cost of doctors visits you can now take home tests and send to a respective laboratory for analysis. A report will follow that describes where you are deficient and how you can make improvements. So simple, yet so effective

Greetings!

I love October! It's such an amazing month that rarely disappoints in terms of weather and scenery. As we shift into a new season and gear up our post summer schedules, it is a good time to get motivated and create new goals. Fall comes at the end of year but for many can feel like a time of new beginnings. With kids back in school, those who are parents often claim this time to get refocused on their own needs. No matter what your life currently entails, be sure to make time for self care.  This is a must for healthy living and happiness!  When we take time for ourselves it feeds our soul and therefore we can show up as better, "brighter", happier people for those in our lives.  We must first show up for ourselves!

OBESITY AND CHILDREN

As most of us are aware U.S. obesity rates have reached epidemic proportion. Approximately 58 million = overweight, 40 million = obese, 3 million = morbidly obese, 8 out of 10 over 25 yrs.old = overweight, 79% = of American's not meeting basic activity level recommendations, 25% = completely sedentary, 78% = increase in Type 2 diabetes in adults 30 - 40 yrs. old since 1990. These statistics are for adults. How about what's happening to the kids?  4% of children = overweight in 1982, 16% = overweight in 1994, 25% = of all white children overweight and 33% = of African American and Hispanic children overweight in 2001. All of the above statistics have increased at rapid rates. Childhood obesity in the U.S. has more than tripled in the last two decades. This problem only increases with adolescence, when physical activity tends to decline. Overweight children tend to become overweight adults with a host of health problems from diabetes to heart disease. There is a massive surge in childhood diabetes. Contributing factors to childhood obesity include inactivity, high caloric intake, and metabolic programming (hereditary factors). Families eat out more often consuming higher-calorie and processed foods in larger portions, as computer use / TV watching continue to increase. Children naturally gain weight and go through growth spurts, and this kind of weight fluctuation is normal. A child who is 30% or 40% overweight, however, needs help to regain a healthy lifestyle. The most successful weight loss programs for children involve parents. Parents must get involved. Children are dependent on them and need help with choices.
Apart from causing various negative health effects, obesity in children also can cause social and emotional effects. Research studies prove that obesity and depression are conversely proportional. Obesity among children can cause social stigma that makes them withdraw from socializing with their peers. They can also develop a poor self-image and feel that they are not being liked at all. Parents can greatly help by making healthy living a family affair, such as limiting TV to a few shows a week, eating right, and being active as a family. Here are some simple activities that can be incorporated to help fight this serious issue we are facing as a nation. Walk the dog, do household chores (vacuum, take out the garbage, wash the car, etc), have active special occasions - go on a hike for a birthday, or to the skating rink, join sports programs, add exercise to weekend plans, take a family bike ride, go swimming, get at least one hour of moderate activity each day, have kids do strength training, buy toys that encourage activity - bats and balls instead of electronic games.  Get other families involved. There are endless options out there and it is never too late to get healthier!  Never be afraid to ask for support of your friends and family.

 Simple Pleasures

 Can You Water Bottles!

                        bottles

-  Americans drink approximately 1 billion bottles of   water a week, or 167 bottles per person per year.

-  Fewer that 20% of these bottles are recycled.

-  More than 30 million water bottles per day end up as garbage or litter.

-  It takes 3 liters of water to produce 1 liter of bottled water.

-  Nearly 2.5 billion bottles of water a year are sold in New York alone.  Stacked up end to end, they'd reach the moon!

I encourage you to be part of the solution by using your own water bottle and refilling it with fresh, clean water.  Stainless steel water bottles or glass bottles are great alternatives which will benefit your health as well protecting you from the many risks of digesting plastic!

RECIPE BOX

Pumpkin Risotto

4 miniature pumpkins (preferably Jack-Be-Little) 3-1/2 to 4 inches in diameter (optional)
1-1/4 cups diced (1/4-inch) peeled seeded fresh pumpkin (preferably from sugar or luxury pie pumpkins)
2 cups chicken stock
2 cups water
1 small onion, chopped fine
1 Tablespoon olive oil
3/4 cup Arborio rice
1 ounce (1/3 cup) grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
1 Tablespoon unsalted butter
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Fill a small roasting pan with about one-half inch of water. Place the mini-pumpkins in the water and cover tightly with foil. Roast the pumpkins until very tender, forty-five to fifty minutes. Cool slightly. Cut out the tops and reserve, then scoop out the seeds. Discard water from roasting pan, then return pumpkin shells to the pan and keep them warm, covered with foil.

- Make the risotto while the pumpkins roast. Begin by cooking the diced pumpkin in a medium saucepan two-thirds full of simmering water until tender, two to three minutes. Drain thoroughly.

- Bring the stock and water to a simmer in a small saucepan and keep at a bare simmer.

- Cook onion in oil in a two- to two-and-a-half-quart heavy saucepan over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until softened, about three minutes. Add the rice and cook, stirring, for one minute. Add one cup of simmering stock and cook at a strong simmer, stirring constantly, until the stock is absorbed. Continue simmering, adding the stock a half cup at a time, stirring constantly and letting each addition be absorbed before adding the next, until rice is tender and creamy looking but still al dente, about eighteen minutes total. (There may be some broth left over.)
