Outfitting Enews

January 25, 2012

Greetings!

I hope this email finds you well on this fine morning.  It is beautiful here in Ely.  We have gotten about 3 inches of snow over the past couple of days, which is great news for skiing and winter camping conditions.  Today is the first day to reserve Boundary Waters canoeing permits, and it has me thinking about paddling up the Stuart River to one of my favorite campsites on Rush Lake.  I can't wait to get back into a canoe.  Until ice out though, I will be taking advantage of this fantastic winter weather we have been having.  I hope you have the chance to have a little winter fun!

Sincerely,
Adam Macht

This is what last year's trippers had to say:

Hi Drew and Adam,
I had an absolutely wonderful time on the trip with Steve and Cliff.  Steve is simply amazing- he knows an incredible amount about the lakes, wildlife and animals in the area- he is by far the best guide I have ever had for a canoe trip.  Cliff was a great travel companion, as well- also an incredible amount of knowledge and experience.  It was also interesting listening to Cliff and Steve discuss various approaches to things that came up during the trip.

Now that I've had a shower (well, several, actually, by now) and changed into clean clothes, I am already looking forward to next year's trip!  (though it will be tough to top this year's).

Thank you very much for everything you did behind the scenes to make the trip so successful!
   --
Nancy Brucken, Ann Arbor, MI

Enjoyed everything about it. Steve was great. Cliff was great. Fellow paddlers, water, air, stars, loons, eagles all great. Only canoe trip I've taken where I didn't lose weight.

Gentlemen,

I would like to thank your firm, personnel, and the outstanding guides.  You exceeded our expectations.  The warm greeting, the help on all fronts (fishing tips, spare equipment and purchases from the store, weather forecasts, insight on the guides), communication, schedule, equipment quality and dispersment was efficient and professional.   The Michigan crew discussed our trip at length on the return drive and could not think of anything that we would change.

We do not know what to say to express our experience with Cliff and Steve. It was outstanding.

Thank you for the experience.

Dan, Jack and John

The Michigan Crew

Vietnam Kayak Trip

Dear friends,

I have been offered the opportunity to return to one of my favorite places in the world to guide a paddling adventure in Vietnam.   After several trips to Vietnam I never get sick of it and I always say yes when the call comes to guide again.  The trip will be April 17 - 30, 2012 ($3895).   We'll climb aboard our brand new luxury craft that will be our base for paddling in Ha Long Bay for 6 days and go to the outer reaches of the big bay to explore where other tourists rarely visit.  The big excitement is paddling into sea caves that connect to salt water lakes in the interior of an island.  These hongs are where we'll find most of the wildlife like macaques and hornbills and perhaps the rare Cat Ba langur.  Life on board the ship is nothing short of epicurean and indulgent.

The second half of the trip we travel up toward the Chinese border in the mountains of Ba Be National Park.  Paddling is on the lake there and the river which cuts spectacularly right through the solid rock of a small mountain.   We'll visit and stay with the chief of the local village of Tai minority people and see how they use dug-out canoes for moving their produce to market and getting around the lake.  Short hikes in the mountains will bring us to remote villages of Tai people and their market day where most everything for sale will be new to our eyes.

The Vietnamese people living on boats and floating villages in Ha Long and the minority people in the mountains are among the most friendly you will ever meet.  They are happy to show us how they live and share food from their kitchens and a sip or two of their homemade snake wine which is really ever clear with a preserved snake in the bottom of the bottle.   You'll gain a far reaching understanding of this industrious country that played such huge role in the lives of any American over 50.   Join me this April and I'll show you a people and a scenery you'll never forget and share with all your friends as a lifetime adventure.
