Greetings!
Hello from the End of the Road. November is almost here. We are beginning to see the first signs of Winter and I think you know that by that I mean snow. Drew Brockett ventured outside this morning and grabbed these shots. Since then it all disappeared with rain, was reborn as ice and now it is snowing again. Be sure to check out our used canoes and used gear. This is the time of year when you can get fantastic prices on experienced gear. Did you know that we're the only outfitter in Ely (and perhaps anywhere) that sells all of our canoes, kayaks and outfitting canoe camping gear every year. That's right, each year we start over the new season with new stuff for you to take on your trip! |

Notes from the Outfitting Desk WE ARE ALWAYS OPEN For anyone who is still coming up to Ely in the next week or so and you want to get out for a day trip, we are still open in the outfitting department. In fact, we never close. We will rent you a canoe until there are no more places to paddle and the ice has taken over. So if you want to get that last paddle in, just stop by and we'll set you up. Drew and Adam are here and can make sure you have an enjoyable and safe day on the water. Who will be our last rental of the season? We'll find out soon. GREAT USED GEAR FOR SALE There is plenty of used gear for sale. Here is a link to the list of items and prices: http://www.piragis.com/usedboundarywaterscanoegearsale2011.html These items have been very popular over the years as people understand that we are always turning over our gear so that you know you are getting an item in very good shape. From tents to packs to tarps to paddles, we can get you started on filling your camping closet with high quality items. And do not forget the life vests. They are a steal this year at only $25 each!!! Get some for your cabin, boat or stock up for your scout group. 2012 TRIPPERS It's never too early to start thinking about your canoe trip in 2012. Call or email Drew or Adam and we'll start helping you with routes, canoe rental or anything else you need for your adventure. We are still a bit early to actually reserve permits, but that time will arrive sooner rather than later. There may be a change in how permits are reserved for the early planners. The Forest Service is working with outfitters for a plan of action this winter. For instance, there might not be a lottery anymore and they may just open up permits on a specific date. We will keep you posted on all of this, of course. But, no matter how or when we are able to reserve permits for you, get your trip on our books and we'll be ready to reserve your permit as soon as we know what the plan is going to be. Remember that it's always better to get your permit early than at the last minute. That will certainly give you the best chance at getting the entry point that is your first choice. PICTURES AND STORIES One thing we love to do it put YOUR pictures and stories in our e-newsletters. Please feel free to send them to us so we can share them with our loyal readers. Now that the canoeing season is in its last weeks, canoe trip pictures and write-ups can help us all get through a cold, frozen winter of no paddling. Help everyone get excited for a future trip by sending us these items. THANK YOU We truly appreciate all of our repeat clients that we were able to help out this past summer. It's always good to chat about a trip in the off-season and then see you up in Ely as you take another journey in the wilderness. And for all the new paddlers that we outfitted and helped with routing, rentals, etc, we hope you had a fabulous time and will become repeat customers of ours and be a part of the Piragis paddling community. We love what we do and without all of you giving us the chance to make your trip a great one, we would not be here. Thanks from all of us in the outfitting department. Remember that Drew and Adam are always here to get your next journey off to a wonderful start. Drew Brockett Outfitting Manager Piragis Northwoods Company [email protected]

Call 1-800-223-6565 or email Drew or Adam to plan a trip into the Boundary Waters or Quetico wilderness in 2012!!! Send me your trip stories and pictures: piragis webmaster"Thank You Piragis Northwoods! There are no words to describe the beauty of our time in the BWCA. Time stood still while we connected with the world around us and with each other. It's been hard to describe the experience to family and friends who were eager to hear all about it, but so many of them have said the excitement in our voice and smiles on our faces tell a story more complete than any details could provide. Adam, you were an amazing compliment to our vacation. Sure, we couldn't have managed without you, but you went above and beyond from the time you spent fishing and exploring with us to the lessons you taught the kids about everything from wildlife to constellations. They hung on your every word and have retained most everything! The kindness of the people of Piragis and Ely, along with the 800+ pictures we took, made this a vacation we will never forget. Thank you for making it possible!" The Glovers - Todd, Stacy, Greer (12), Rowan (9) & Hollis (6) To: Steve Piragis Re: Boundary Waters Pants, Shirt, Quetico Trekkers, Chota Wading Socks "I spoke with you at the store a couple of weeks ago after completing a canoe trip. We talked about the Boundary Waters Pants and Shirt, which I have been wearing on canoe trips during the past three years. The fabric and features have worked very well for me, notably, the two security zip pockets -- left rear and right front. I also want to comment again on the Quetico Trekkers, which I have been using since 2007. In 2011 I added the Chota Caney Fork Knee High Wading Sock and have used them on two canoe trips, as well as numerous day outings. The combination of the Quetico Trekkers and Wading Socks affords me sure-footed support on portage trails and the freedom to step comfortably into the water as needed at put-ins and take-outs and in loading and unloading the canoe. This sense of freedom, security and comfort are important to my canoe-tripping style, and help to ease the transition from paddling to portaging and back to paddling. I hope you will contine to offer these excellent products."Sincerely, Brent Brye Wausau, Wisconsin

What's New in the Boundary Waters?
|
This past Monday, Steve Johnson and some other representatives from Outfitters were invited to accompany the Forest Service as they went into the Lake One Area. Out of this trip we've gotten our first look at the fire touched closure areas that came first hand. Overall, Steve Johnson said that he came away more encouraged than discouraged and saw many signs of greening up, wildlife and a forest carrying on with life. In some places, as you'll see, that means little or no obvious change to a canoe camper's immediate surroundings. In other places the campsites were drastically wounded. Some campsites will appear normal but have different views across the lake than campers are accustomed to. As the natural course of action after a fire, some areas will appear much more open to the naked eye until the new growth begins to fill those areas. We are encouraged by what he discovered and are anxious to paddle all the routes within the closure zone as soon as we can.
