Piragis Northwoods Company in Ely, Minnesota
Piragis Northwoods Company Enews
August 4, 2011
Greetings!

It's August.  Warm.  Sunny.  Summer.

Glorious is how we've been referring to it.  Near paradise conditions in the Boundary Waters.  Ely is definitely the place to be.  These are the days when our canoe warehouse rental shelves empty.  It seems everyone is out in the woods.

It is an excellent choice for summer vacation, that is for sure.

One of our outfitting employees just told me she saw a yearling bear while out riding her bike.  Moose and wolves have been seen as well.  The fishing seems to be good.  Our nights are in the fifties and our days in the low 80s.  Like I said :)

We've got a couple of new specials and the latest news from the end of the road!

Sincerely,
Tim Stouffer
Piragis Northwoods Company

The slap of a beaver's tail,
the buzz of a mosquito near
your ear;
the splash of a rising fish.
Each,
an orchestrated note
combined with the drip from
the edge of your paddle.
(as you sit in your canoe)
Together, climb towards crescendo.
An odd melody as
eyes strain, knifing through the
dusk,
towards the next campsite.

Judge says NO to 450 Cell Phone Tower visible from the Boundary Waters
From the Minneapolis Star Tribune:

In a ruling for preserving scenery over expanding the reach of cellphones, a Hennepin County judge ordered Wednesday that AT&T cannot build a 450-foot lighted cellphone tower visible from inside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Steve Piragis penned this response:

Judge Bush's ruling in favor of the Friends of the Boundary Waters law suit against ATT this week is really a win for everyone not just friends of wilderness.  The ruling is a demonstration of practical common sense and a resolution to an issue that could have been avoided so easily.  The ruling opens the way for ATT to finally build a 199 foot tower on the Fernberg road that will satisfy the needs of residents of the Fernberg corridor and supply many paddlers and motorized boaters in and out of the BWCA with quality cell phone coverage.

At 199 feet the tower does not need lights and is acceptable to all concerned wilderness advocates.  It supplies just 17% less coverage than the sky scraping, lighted 450 foot tower that was proposed.   Maps indicate that where people live this shorter tower will work just fine and allow coverage far into the Boundary Waters. Why not just put this one behind us and call it a win/win.  I want to encourage ATT to erect that 199 foot tower this summer and give us the opportunity to enjoy modern communications where we live and recreate and avoid another long delay with an appeal to the ruling.  An appeal will take months or even years and will only delay construction.  If ATT were to win an appeal we would only gain 17% more coverage.  ATT, time to cut the losses and built the practical unlit 199 foot tower and move on.  Ten years from now communication may be totally into new technology that may not require towers at all so why waste more time and money on appealing law suits.

This ruling this week is a good practical compromise that illustrates real common sense and a victory for everyone concerned.

How's the fishing been this year?
See for yourself!

Boundary Waters Bear Watch
We haven't heard anything new on the bear sightings at BWCA campsites.  Perhaps because the berries are ripening, or maybe just because we're getting the word out and people are steering away from the few sites that were attracting bear activity.

If you've seen something at your camp, let us know and we'll continue to keep everyone posted.

Remember that a clean camp should be a bear-free camp.  Let's all do our part to keep food put away and hidden.  Don't take it in your tents either.  Thanks everyone who has kept us and the Forest Service updated so far this year.
