Our Outfitting Department has many Guided Group Trips every summer, but for this write-up, we'll focus on the Women's Trip that we do. It's a great opportunity to experience a paddling adventure in the best canoe area in the world; so whether you are arriving solo or with some friends, you are sure to leave with vivid memories of everything you have seen and done.

Adventures in Denali and Greenland featuring Minnesota Explorer, Lonnie Dupre.

Like the idea of Adventure? Our friend Lonnie Dupre was just in Ely, speaking about his latest trip: an attempt to Solo Summit Denali in January. He brought great slides and video and also talked about his adventure in Greenland. We captured it all on film and put it up on YouTube if you'd like to watch. 
Denali, aka Mount McKinley, in Alaska, is North America's highest mountain at 20,320 feet. Denali's high latitude (being close to the Arctic) makes it feel like a 23,000-foot peak. This, along with its unpredictable weather and vast crevasse fields, makes it a challenging climb in summer even by Himalayan standards. But in the winter it's a whole different set of conditions. Winds often exceed 100 miles per hour, temperatures plummet below -50F, and there's an average of only six hours of sunlight. Check out the video of Lonnie's presentation here. Only nine expeditions totaling 16 people have ever reached the summit of Denali in winter. Six deaths resulted from those climbs. Only one team (comprised of three Russian climbers) has ever made the summit in January - the dead of winter. Of those nine original expeditions, four were solo, but none of the solos were in January, the darkest and coldest time. |

New extended Outfitting Hours this Summer

Beginning Mid-May and going through Mid-September we're extending our Outfitting hours this summer. We're always the first place open in town, at 6 a.m. That won't change, get up early, come on in, we're here to serve you.
For the first time ever we're going to be open until 9 p.m. This will be helpful to you, if you're returning gear late or if you are arriving late afternoon and want to get a head start on the next day's trip plans. Sometimes traffic doesn't cooperate and you need to pick up a permit after 6 p.m. Our knowledgeable outfitting staff will be here to help you get it done! We have lots of walk-in traffic and this will be an excellent opportunity to meet the needs of people planning a trip at the last minute.
We try to listen to our customers and give them what they need. More customer service + extended hours = Good Things For You!
