Piragis Northwoods Company Enews January 6, 2011

Greetings!
We've gotten a lot of snow here and the New Year rang in with some pretty cold nights. It is above zero now, 3 degrees as I write this, a fairly warm day, though it has some bite to it. It is a great time to be outdoors and a wonderful time to try winter camping. Many folks are out snowshoeing, skiing and fishing. The ski trails are all groomed and we're gathering reports from the community and those of us who get a chance to get out. We're also keeping track of where people who rent skis and snowshoes from us go and what they find on their routes. It is very beautiful outside and that definitely makes up for a few cold noses and toeses. We just received a new shipment of blem paddles from Bending Branches, including some BB Specials. Scroll down for more info on that sale. You'll remember it all adds up to significant savings for you, if you don't mind a few cosmetic abnormalities. From the end of the road,
Sincerely, Tim Stouffer Piragis Northwoods Company | | Jethro and Susie Piragis |

Snow Report for the North Arm Trails
|
Our friend Chris Hindman stopped in to say hello and then went up to ski the North Arm Trails on Tuesday. This is his report.
The skiing is excellent. All of the trails in the wilderness have been skied and the trails outside the wilderness are groomed and tracked. The trees are caked with snow and there are many hanging over the ski trails. We skied the Slim Lake Loop and some of the inside trails. Slim Lake dose have slush in the middle and along the east shore, but it's worth skiing the slush to complete the loop. I also skied South Farm Lake on Sunday from the Blue Heron. The lake has slush throughout so we ended up skiing the dogsled trails within the White Iron and Kawishiwi River triangle. Again the skiing was excellent and the trails were beautiful. I would advise anyone wanting to travel on the lakes that the slush may be too much and very slow going, sticking to the inland trails provides excellent skiing and incredible scenery.

A New Years Eve Day Outside
|
New Year's Eve and New Year's Day were full of plenty to do. My son, Simon had a Time Trial with the Ely Nordic Wolves Ski Team. There was, of course, football on the tube. Oh, and more football before and after that game. There were parties to go to each day. We were still enjoying the big snow and the quiet comfort of a warm living room with our Christmas Tree. I could have easily got caught up in the non-drama of everything and taken a big long nap on the couch. When you live in Ely, though, it is too beautiful outside to pass up adventure. You can't just sit inside and watch it all go by your window. You've got to get out and get in the mix. We packed up the jeep and went fishing. READ THE REST OF THE STORY HERE

News from the Outfitting Desk
The lottery for 2011 Boundary Waters Canoe Area permits has begun. We were able to start putting in applications for permits on December 1st and we can continue doing this through January 15th. So, if you are an early planner and know when and where you plan on taking your journey, Bert and Drew would be happy to get you entered into this process.
It certainly is the best way to get the permit you want for your trip. They will run the lottery for a few days starting January 16th and then starting January 20th, we can reserve permits on a first come, first served basis. Just remember that when it comes down to permits for a trip, the old saying is correct - the earlier the better. Give us a call and we'll help you plan your trip and figure out the best entry point for what you want to do. Quetico permits are available 5 months in advance of the date you want to enter. So, this month, we will reserve permits for May trippers. January will be for June trippers and so on. Call us for any information you need on Quetico permits and taking a trip into Canada.
