Greetings!
Thanks for all the kind words you sent back to us after the last newsletter. It was a tough weekend here, thinking of the five year anniversary of our friend's passing, but your notes warmed our hearts. Here's a couple pictures of Joe how we like to remember him, with a paddle in his hand and smile on his face. | Joe Seliga and Cliff Jacobson paddling a Bell Kevlar Seliga Tripper |
Cliff Jacobson sent us these with a short little note: Merry Christmas you two: I just had to write to tell you how much I enjoyed your eulogy of Joe Seliga in the recent newsletter. It was wonderful. And so are you! Bear hugs, Cliff | Joe in the Bow |
That's pretty much the sentiment we received from most of you. Thanks again for helping us keep Joe's memories alive. When I get the time, I'll post some of those nice responses on our blog for all to share. From the end of the road,

A Trip Diary from Mother and Daughter
I had been asking my daughter for weeks if she would do a trip over MEA weekend. I had a hunch the weather would be good. She hesitated to commit, but finally did. She didn't regret her decision.
Thurs, Oct 21: We arrived in Ely around 2pm and went straight to Piragis. I had been emailing back and forth with Drew -- and he had some canoe options for us, and some ideas for a route. Drew is a gem -- enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and fun to work with. We decided on a graphite Escape -- a fitting name -- with "innie" wood gunnels, a foot rest for me in the stern, and sliding seat options for Hazel in the bow.
Then we looked at the BIG map. Mudro was one option, but when we traced a loop from South Kiwishiwi through Eskwanaga, to Clear (night one) and back to South Kiwishiwi (night two) I knew that would be the best route. Smaller water, and wind at our backs if the weather predictors were right. They were.
Spent the night at the Super 8, right across from Pamida where Hazel did last minute shopping (duct tape, peanut butter) We had already hit the Coop in Mpls on the drive up, where we bought fresh food to complement the freeze dried meals I'd purchased the night before. We didn't even try to plan meals, but relied on a good combination of ingredients, including chocolate, coffee, and cocoa.
After packing and repacking while watching Project Runway in the motel room, we went out for dinner.

New's from Ely: Ely Nordic Wolves Varsity Cross Country Ski Teams win The Ely Classic Invitational on December 18th!
Saturday dawned with fresh snow on the ground and it was difficult to find a kick wax that would work well, but after deciding purple was a keeper the teams struck out to do battle on the course. The weather was perfect, not too cold, not too warm, as Ely's Boys and Girls teams took first place.
These pictures are of my son who is on the junior high team. He's only skied about 20 times at the most in his life and this was his first race. We were sure proud of him and everyone on all the teams.

News from the Outfitting Desk
The lottery for 2011 Boundary Waters Canoe Area permits has begun. We were able to start putting in applications for permits on December 1st and we can continue doing this through January 15th. So, if you are an early planner and know when and where you plan on taking your journey, Bert and Drew would be happy to get you entered into this process.
It certainly is the best way to get the permit you want for your trip. They will run the lottery for a few days starting January 16th and then starting January 20th, we can reserve permits on a first come, first served basis. Just remember that when it comes down to permits for a trip, the old saying is correct - the earlier the better. Give us a call and we'll help you plan your trip and figure out the best entry point for what you want to do. Quetico permits are available 5 months in advance of the date you want to enter. So, this month, we will reserve permits for May trippers. January will be for June trippers and so on. Call us for any information you need on Quetico permits and taking a trip into Canada.
