December 8, 2010
Greetings!

We've dropped into the deep freeze, well not quite, but we're into a stretch of nights well below zero with a mix of sun and more snow in the forecast.  It really is great skiing and snowshoeing weather.

Steve Piragis and Steve Schon took a wood canvas Seliga Canoe out on Burntside Lake on Monday afternoon.  They put in at the public landing off of Van Vac Road on a windy day for some fun.  When we drove over there Tuesday about 16 hours later the lake was frozen over.  Not quite an inch thick, it wasn't enough to support people weight, and there were open spots of water with steam rising swiftly in the chilly morning air.  It was enough ice to cause us to put the canoe up for the year, though.

Quite a year for paddling.  We began the 1st of April and ended the 6th of December.

From the end of the road,

Sincerely,
Tim Stouffer

Permit Info
The lottery for 2011 Boundary Waters Canoe Area permits has begun.  We were able to start putting in applications for permits on December 1st and we can continue doing this through January 15th.  So, if you are an early planner and know when and where you plan on taking your journey, Bert and Drew would be happy to get you entered into this process.  It certainly is the best way to get the permit you want for your trip.  They will run the lottery for a few days starting January 16th and then starting January 20th, we can reserve permits on a first come, first served basis.  Just remember that when it comes down to permits for a trip, the old saying is correct.....the earlier the better.  Give us a call and we'll help you plan your trip and figure out the best entry point for what you want to do.

Quetico permits are available 5 months in advance of the date you want to enter.  So, this month, we will reserve permits for May trippers.  January will be for June trippers and so on.  Call us for any information you need on Quetico permits and taking a trip into Canada.

New Canoe Models for our 2011 Rental Fleet
We are always excited to offer our outfitting clients new canoes each season in the fleet and every so often we can add some new models.  Here they are!
Wenonah - Canak - 16 foot solo
Wenonah  - 17 Wenonah - this is the tandem canoe that started it all for Wenonah Canoe, Inc.
Both of these will be in the Kevlar ultra-light layup.
We have a many different choices in our fleet so if there is something that you have been wanting to paddle on a trip, make sure you reserve the specific one early.  That way, you get the Wenonah or Bell that is your first choice.

Guided Group Trips
What a great gift this would be for your loved one or friend!  Call and reserve a few spots on our popular journeys and experience the Boundary Waters with a guide and all of our top-notch equipment.  You just plan on getting to Ely on a certain date and we'll take care of the rest.  Call Bert or Drew for all the details about these trips.  Space is limited so please keep that in mind.  Here is a list of what we have planned for the 2011 summer.

Paddle North -- Canoeing the Boundary Waters-Quetico Wilderness by Layne Kennedy and Greg Breining
Fantastic Pictures of the BWCAW and Quetico and intriguing essays!

We've long been waiting for a book that someone interested in a canoe trip and the Boundary Waters could pick up and fall in love with instantly.  I want to crawl inside these pictures and paddle along.  For BWCA and Quetico novices and veterans alike, this book immediately calls to mind your best memories of all your trips.  It does more than that though.  It opens up our land to folks who've only heard about the border lakes and are mystified with our BWCAW acronym.  It sheds light on this beautiful wilderness country and realistically delivers the facts about canoe tripping.  It inspires dreams of simple days on the water and quiet nights at home in the woods.  Meditations on map making, canoe building, the rock-pine-water melting pot that makes up the northland, on winter weather, forest fire are accompanied by views of sparkling lakes, rocky cliffs, challenging portages, of campfire reflections, of friendships forged away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.  Paddle North with us!
