Greetings!
The snow is blanketed on the hanging branches of the evergreens and throughout the town of Ely just like an old-fashioned Christmas card would portray winter. We've been busy shoveling, plowing and yes, skiing. That's when we are not here answering phones, packing up boxes and shipping them out.
It is cozy around the stove and some of us have our trees up already. One of my favorite things to do is watch college football on the weekend evenings by our Christmas Tree. These days leading up to the new year are precious and travel by so swiftly. We can miss them if we don't stop and take some time to look around.
As you know, Ely is the perfect place for reflection. We live in a special place and it really is good to be at the end of the road. Many folks are thinking about canoe trips this time of year and Bert and Drew are busy planning next year's adventures with them. Nedra Nicholls is our FREE Kayak winner! She hales from Bloomington Minnesota and has a family cabin on Fall lake near Ely that her father built in the 1950's. She is an experienced canoeist with many Quetico trips behind her and she can't wait to try her new kayak at the family cabin this summer. Congratulations Nedra and thanks to all who entered our drawing this year while checking out our outlet store. It was a great summer and we'd love to see you this winter. Favorite Lures?
It's cold up in Ely today. I'll bet that not many people are thinking about fishing right now, so let's get something started to keep our minds on that fine subject. If you could just bring three lures on your canoe trip in the BWCA or Quetico, which ones would they be? We all probably bring way too many so let's see how you do when you have to cut your quantity down to your top three. This is Drew's Blog, so you'll have to click to find out his answers. I'm going to give you mine here with just a short story about how one of these lures came to be. - Tim Stouffer My three lures would be a Mepps #5 with a dressed treble, a Winkum Spin-n-Float Walleye rig from JB Lures in Minnesota and the lure in the picture below. That one is a popper style that I copied from one my mom found while antique picking here in town. The original was carved by a Finnish resident of Ely whose wife said that whenever he couldn't catch anything he'd tie on his own red and white popper and that would lead to dinner! It is just a simple cedar plug, squat, red and white with dressed treble (my innovation) and a deep wide mouth that produces a bubble and a plop that drives the largemouth and smallmouth bass mad.
