Greetings!

The cooler temperatures have found their way to Ely.  There is skim ice on the edges of the lakes this morning and the wind has those quick, icy fingers that try to take your breath away.  Transition time.

In canoe country that means it is time to apply Watco oil to the wooden canoe gunwhales, lather the 303 Protectant on the royalex and kevlar canoes and the gel-gloss on the colored kevlars.  It's time to (alas) get the canoes and kayaks stored away with a pulley hoist or on storage racks.  If you've still got some warmer weather you may have time to install skid plate kit on your bow and stern.  Time to clean paddles and lifevests and pack the gear away so that we'll be ready for the first Spring paddle.

On the right hand side of our newly formatted newsletter, you'll find some easy links to some fall storage and canoe care items.

Our last canoe rental of the season came back this week.  We are now gearing up to decorate our retail store for Christmas.  Ely, Minnesota has a long standing tradition of opening our stores for local shoppers and visitors to get great deals and have a fantastic social night on the evening of Thanksgiving.  Each year after traditional (and some not) Turkey or Turducken dinners we open our stores for a few hours and greet our friends.  The community celebrates all we are thankful for and we all get a chance to get some early bird deals before the congestion of Black Friday begins.  If you're longing for something different this Holiday season, we extend a welcome invitation for you to join us here in Ely.  Call ahead to Zups Food Market, they'll reserve a turkey for your family.  Lodging is available and we've usually got snow!

From the end of the road,

Sincerely,
Tim Stouffer

What's the Latest?
Do you prefer campfires or no campfires when camping?
That's the question posed on our blog.  Drew Brockett makes an interesting point and tells us what he prefers when he's canoe camping in the Boundary Waters.  We hope you enjoy our Blog.  It is a great way to get updates and just plain cool stuff out there to everyone quickly.  If you follow us on Facebook, you can also read our blog directly from our page there.

Longing for the Boundary Waters?
If you miss being out there like I do, you'll enjoy a great video that I discovered through twitter of all places.  I always search for anyone doing updates or tweets including the words Boundary Waters and I found a wonderful video with steam coming off the morning wilderness waters of the BWCA.  Sun-capped trees on the horizon, canoes knifing through the pristine water and the awesome autumn colors captured exquisitely.  Enjoy it here and don't forget to subscribe to our Blog and then you'll know about the latest before anyone else!  It'll be like you we're here in Ely!

Let's Talk Books with Tim Stouffer
Paddle North -- Canoeing the Boundary Waters-Quetico Wilderness NEW by Layne Kennedy and Greg Breining -- Fantastic Pictures of the BWCAW and Quetico and intriguing essays!
Paddle North a fantastic new book with great pictures about the Boundary Waters and Questico Park
We've long been waiting for a book that someone interested in a canoe trip and the Boundary Waters could pick up and fall in love with instantly.  I want to crawl inside these pictures and paddle along.  For BWCA and Quetico novices and veterans alike, this book immediately calls to mind your best memories of all your trips.  It does more than that though.  It opens up our land to folks who've only heard about the border lakes and are mystified with our BWCAW acronym.  It sheds light on this beautiful wilderness country and realistically delivers the facts about canoe tripping.  It inspires dreams of simple days on the water and quiet nights at home in the woods.  Meditations on map making, canoe building, the rock-pine-water melting pot that makes up the northland, on winter weather, forest fire are accompanied by views of sparkling lakes, rocky cliffs, challenging portages, of campfire reflections, of friendships forged away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.  Paddle North with us!  We're now taking backorders for this book.  They are coming in soon, but we couldn't wait any longer to share this with you!  It'll be the best gift you give to a fellow paddler this year!  (even if that paddler is yourself!)
Have you heard of Tuesday Group?
Tuesday Group is sponsored by Energy Efficient Ely and Piragis Northwoods Company
Each Tuesday a group of us get together at the Grand Ely Lodge and share lunch while we listen to a speaker.  Topics range from politics to energy savings and have included solar and wind powered farming, gardening, wolves, black bears, art, local history.  This past week Roger Powell who has studied the weasel family extensively shared slides and part of their story (it was so interesting, we kept asking questions and he didn't have time to finish.)  Anyway, we usually video the speaker on Tuesdays and throw it up on YouTube under Steve Piragis's channel and that way people who can't be there can see it.  The video isn't fancy, but it is fun and informative.  If you'd like to feel more a part of Ely and get to know some folks a little better (virtually) feel free to watch some of them when you have time.  Roger in particular is very excited about his subject matter and that makes it even more interesting to watch.  Follow Tuesday Group Videos Here.

When a few words say it all:
I have been on two trips with Aaron Chick as leader and am considering coming back again.  He made the trip.  Hard working and knowledgeable guide and fisherman.  Everything was outstanding from the equipment to the food and the fishing!
