It's spring, the time of the year when the grass starts growing along with those pesky weeds! But before you call your local lawn care company, read this article.
Lawn and garden pesticide spraying is truly bad for your health and the health of your pets, birds and all wildlife including the threatened honey bee. Spraying kills earth worms so then we must pay to get our lawns manually aerated. Also earth worms help in the up take of nutrients for plants, creating better healthier plants. They also feed robins. Did you know that birds are a natural means of insect control? Pesticide drift is found in  bird baths and swimming pools. Lawn care spraying ends up as run off going into the sewer and water treatment plant, where the technology is not in place to get rid of it. It ends up in our drinking water and in our bodies. Children are more susceptible to toxins across the board. Small levels of toxins build up over time. The levels of exposure currently deemed safe by the EPA are being seriously questioned by The Center for Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh. The suggestion is when ever possible NOT to use pesticides or Herbicides. Waiting for government rethinking and tighter regulation may be too late.

Organic lawn care does exist. Corn gluten and organic fertilizer should be applied at least twice yearly. (It can be applied as much as every two months for quicker weed suppression). The first application is in March when the Forsythia blooms, and secondly in mid October. Corn gluten suppresses the germination of annual and perennial broad leaf weeds. It takes several years to successfully convert a yard, and patience is required. Corn gluten and organic fertilizer can be purchased from Agway or Gardens Alive Phone: 513-354-1484, or  www.gardensalive.com. For spot treating weeds use either All Down or Burn Out. These two products can be purchased from Peaceful Valley Farm and Garden Supply Phone: 888-784-1722, or www.groworganic.com

In conclusion I want to state that for every weed, grub or pest problem there is an organic alternative that works. This includes termites. Milky spore kills grubs, milky spore can be found at Agway. Nematodes also kill grubs and can be found at Gardens Alive or the Peaceful Valley Farm and Garden Supply. For example for carpenter ants Eccho IC2 from Orkin works. It is a high concentration of mint oil with nothing else added. I will be happy to receive emails and send out specific information related to this article upon request. Email requests to karenlee135@msn.com.
