Guest House
Rumi

paintingThis being human is a guest house
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

Honey Bee Mystery
honey bee
All across the United States, honeybees are flying away from their hives and dying. Empty hives are causing a lot of worry about some important food crops.

Bees give us a lot more than delicious honey. They are pollinators-they enable plants to produce the fruits and nuts we enjoy by carrying pollen from one plant or flower to the next. The wind pollinates oats, corn, and wheat, but many other plants (like apple and cherry trees and melon vines) depend on insects, bats, and birds.

Researchers do have some ideas about what could be affecting bee health. They could be sick from poisons widely used to kill insects, or they might not be getting enough good food to stay strong. Also, tiny insects called mites feed on bees. Any or all of these things could be weakening the honey bees. Bees are worth protecting because their work adds so much to our diet. What can we do to protect our nature ?

Quotes to Live By

"If you keep one foot in your past and the other in your future, you'll end up pissing' all over your present."
                      ~ananymous

"A pearl is a beautiful thing that is produced by an injured life. It is the tear (that results) from the injury of the oyster. The treasure of our being in this world is also produced by an injured life. If we had not been wounded, if we had not been injured, then we will not produce the pearl."
               ~Stephan Hoeller

"Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile is the source of your joy."
             ~Thich Nhat Hanh

"Good humor is a tonic for the  mind and body. It is the best antidote for anxiety and depression. It is a business asset. It attracts and keeps friends. It lightens human burdens. It is the direct route to serenity and contentment."
            ~Greenville Kleisser

Simplifying (part 2)

Sometimes our attempts to be happy backfire.  One of the ways we attempt to be happy is to maximize our choices.  Here are some things to try as experiments to discover whether having too many choices might be making you less happy.

Get Rid Of One Non-Essential Item Per Day

It could be some papers in a stack that has been sitting for some time; it could be an object that you no longer use or which no longer fits you or your life.  Find one thing each day and donate it, give it away or toss it out.

CONSOLATION
by Chuck Joy

we people here
we come from anywhere
sometimes standing there
at the door before it's open

many are regulars
we're like a family
except here, when you screw up
we escort you out

some come to take away
others stay, sometimes for hours
sitting at tables and counters
playing themselves on our small stage

that's why we come
the customers, every one
what we have to offer
our few minutes of consolation

*        *        *

for all the curveballs
of outrageous fortune
weapons of mass destruction
here we come

every road closed
every bullet to the bone
nobody home
here we come

now you're here too
I'm sorry for your foolish heart
for any trouble, every problem
but I'm happy to see you

this one's on me
that's right, it's free
we're here for you
enjoy your visit
