    Tracking local CO2 emissions
The Energy Saving Trust (EST) has launched TrACE, a new tool that will record CO2 saving evidence. TrACE (Tracking Actions on Carbon Emissions), developed with input from the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE), is designed to help local authorities report and keep track of their actions to curb local carbon dioxide emissions, in line with their new national performance indicator, NI 186. A database has also been developed for the EST that can help to bring together local authority data with housing, demographic, economic and CO2 emissions data. This new database will, over time, enable more effective comparison and benchmarking of local authority performance and improved understanding of those actions and initiatives which make most difference at local level to CO2 emissions. While aimed primarily at English local authorities, it is a useful tool for any local authority in the UK that wants to monitor and report on carbon saving actions related to domestic, transport and commercial/industrial emissions in their area.

    Cities and climate change
The topic for the 5th Urban Research Symposium, held in Marseilles from 27 June to 1 July 2009, was Cities and Climate Change: Responding to the Urgent Agenda. At a time when climate change is a major priority for the international community, this Symposium aimed at pushing forward the research agenda on climate change from a city's perspective. Specifically, the main questions were structured around the impacts of city and urban growth on climate change; measuring and anticipating the consequences of climate change on urban quality of life, city assets, and local and national economies; and assessing alternatives to increase the resilience of cities and related costs and incentives required for successful implementation. more
    Building low carbon communities
Kyoto to Kettering, Copenhagen to Croydon: local government's manifesto for building low-carbon communities
A new publication from the Local Government Association argues that local authorities have an absolutely crucial and pivotal role in tackling climate change. The LGA's new manifesto sets out the framework, and specific policies, needed to enable local government to develop low carbon communities. It suggests that if central government gives local government the adequate framework and resources to deliver, councils can take on the responsibility for reducing emissions and adapting to climate change at the local level.
    Sustainable cities
The Natural Capital Initiative and the Science Council, supported by the British Library, held an event in London on 15 June 2009, to explore the concept of 'greening' a city. High-profile speakers presented their arguments on 'greening cities' before a large audience of policymakers, urban designers, ecologists, students and members of the public. more
