| LIFE+ Call for proposals |
The LIFE+ 2009 call for project proposals opened on 15 May with up to €250 million available for co-financing of projects. You have until 15 September to submit your proposal to your national authorities. Up to 50% of the eligible costs may be funded. LIFE is the EU's financial instrument supporting environmental and nature conservation projects throughout the EU. It is managed by the LIFE Unit within the Environment Directorate General of the European Commission. more |
| Community empowerment |
Since the beginning of April 2009, local authorities have a duty to 'inform, consult and engage' local communities in everything they do. To help councils and their partners implement this duty, the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) has launched a new community empowerment resource which provides an introduction to community engagement, together with further information on: Government expectations for community empowerment; developing your council and partnerships for community empowerment; practical ways to engage with your community; IDeA work to develop community empowerment good practice; case studies of council and partnership good practice; links to key documents and other organisation's websites; and customer choice and the personalisation of customer services. | EMAN 2009: Environmental accounting |
Following the tradition of the previous conferences, EMAN 2009: Environmental Accounting and Sustainable Development Indicators, held in Prague on 23-24 April 2009, provided a forum for the dissemination and exchange of ideas related to the promotion of environmental and sustainability management on micro and macro levels through tools like environmental accounting and sustainable development indicators. Conference papers are available, covering the following themes: Eco-industry; Ecological footprint accounting; Environmental modeling; Environmental services welfare and valuation issues; material and energy flow accounting; Water related issues; Sustainability indicators; Sustainability accounting; Sustainability management issues; and Sustainability reporting. | Local and regional government in Europe |
Over 1,000 representatives of municipalities, towns, cities, provinces and regions from 40 European countries have attended the general assembly of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), held in Malmö on 22-24 April 2009. Delegates have adopted a final declaration and a resolution. The declaration puts forward core principles on the direction Europe should take. The resolution spells out the views of local and regional authorities on a number of issues such as climate change, demographic changes, international relations and gender equality. Copies of speeches and presentations are also available online.

| Transport in a post-carbon society |
The latest issue of World Transport Policy & Practice, (Vol.14 No.4, April 2009),is a special issue based on outcomes of the conference Planning for the Carbon Neutral World: Challenges for Cities and Regions, held in Salzburg on 15-18 May 2008. The conference brought together transport planners, architects, urban designers and other professionals, from both practice and academia. It provided a platform to discuss and explore, from an economic, land use and transportation perspective, possibilities to develop carbon-neutral cities. View PDF |
| Global Climate Network |
Working with institutes and think tanks in Brazil, China, Germany, India, Nigeria, Australia and the USA, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has established the Global Climate Network, which aims to help bridge the divide between industrialised and developing countries on climate change policy. The network will commission, conduct and publish joint research and analysis which addresses the political and policy constraints to international action on climate change. Its work will address the main areas of the international negotiations, such as the targets needed to avoid dangerous climate change and the policies needed to achieve the targets, but through the lens of national policy and politics in each of the member countries.
