Greetings!

Last year, I did a newsletter article on networking during the holidays. It was primarily aimed at small business owners networking for clients. This year, I have rewritten the article for job seekers. As such, it may not be of direct interest to many of my readers. But I ask, in this time of economic uncertainty, that you forward it to friends and family members who may be facing job loss. It's all in the gift-giving spirit of the holidays.

Thank you and a very happy holiday season to you all!
Networking During the Holidays

The holiday season is upon us. And everyone says that it's a slow time of year for finding a new job. Why is that? This can be one of the best times for the savvy networker. And if you are reading this, that means you are a savvy networker, right? Or at least aspire to be one.

The events and oportunities this time of year are endless. You just have to be willing to see the possibilities. Here are just a few:

Holiday Parties

Holiday parties are great social functions, but you can turn them into networking opportunties as well. Just be conscious of and honor the occasion. In other words, don't bring your resume to a party. Do a lot of listening. Does anyone talk about companies that are expanding next year? Or perhaps someone talks about how hard it is to find good help? Any of these could be an opportunity to invite the speaker for a cup of coffee in the new year. And remember. It's not all about you. Listen for needs. Connect people who need to meet each other. This is a great time of year to give someone a referral that answers a real need. It's all part of the gift-giving spirit of the season.

Holiday Cards and Letters

How often do you find yourself thinking about people you've lost contact with? This is the perfect time of year to reach out. Send a holiday card. Pick up the phone and call. It's very simple. Just say, "You know, it's been a while since we talked, and I was just wanting to say Hi and wish you a happy holiday." And just like that, you've reconnected with an old friend, colleague or client.

Do not overlook that old tradition of the holiday letter. Brag about yourself and all the great things you've done this year. And mention that you are looking for new opportunies and ask if anyone has any ideas or contacts for you.

Holiday Travel

Many people travel this time of year. Networking doesn't have to stop when you leave town. Even if your job search is local, you can still tell friends and family about it. You never know who people know until you start talking. Maybe Great Aunt Mary lives in Pierre, South Dakota and you're looking in Springfield, Virginia. But what you didn't know until you mentioned it is that Great Aunt Mary's beloved god daughter just moved to Arlington. And is in need of someone like you. So don't be shy.

Networking doesn't have to go down just because the decorations go up. Networking is about building and maintaining relationships. And isn't that what the holidays are about too? Well, okay. It's really about the presents. But building relationships now can lead to presents all next year!
