Get More Out of Your Workout! Tips from Lynne Balliette

Lynne Balliette, CFM Instructor since 2003, has been a certified Pilates instructor since 1998. She completed a Master of Arts degree in movement science from Teachers College, Columbia University, in May 2009. This newsletter contribution is taken from her graduate thesis.

When people first try Pilates, they are often surprised by how difficult it can be, but perhaps most surprising is how much mental effort it takes. Trying to maintain awareness and control of your body can seem a daunting task when you are already straining and sweating through an exercise.

It may help to know that Joseph Pilates called his method Contrology, and that he felt the concentration required to control the body during the workout was what made his method so much more beneficial than conventional exercise. Of course, we now know that mind-body exercise disciplines, such as Pilates, do affect both physical and mental well-being.

So, to get the most out of your Pilates session, remember to keep your mind focused as you are working. If you aren't sure where to focus your attention during a particular exercise, just ask your instructor, or put your focus on your powerhouse muscles and spine, always a safe bet during Pilates. By being more mentally focused during your sessions, you may find yourself learning new things about the way your body works, and that what seemed so daunting at first is now an amazing opportunity for self-discovery.

Teen Class @ 2nd Ave (Tuesdays @ 4:30pm)

Our newly added teen class is in full swing. The teens are having fun, working hard and reaping the benefits of Pilates!

This class focuses on improving posture, self-awareness, core strength and flexibility, all of which support healthy growth through the teen years as explained and taught by owner Donna Singer.

For those teens looking to improve their skills at other sports, Pilates is a great compliment! Pilates helps build positive inter-team relations, improves endurance, agility, precision, energy, and focus. For the non-athletic teen, Pilates improves body mechanics and helps them feel stronger and more comfortable in their bodies.

Sign up while there's still space available! Call or book online today.

Anti-Aging Facts from Joanna Stefaniak M.D.

Dr. Joanna Stefaniak is an Apprentice enrolled in our CFM training program. Hobbies: Group and Personal training. Real life: an Anesthesiologist from Vienna, Austria and is in New York for one year on a research grant.

The human body is made up of an average of 50% to 75% water, depending upon age, gender, and body size. Your cells need nutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins & minerals), but they also need water. If you don't drink adequate amounts of water, your cells will suffer from dehydration. They will begin to move water from inside the cells to the bloodstream, in order to maintain blood volume and blood pressure.

If cell dehydration continues, these symptoms can occur: thirst, dry mouth, reduced sweating, dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, and dry skin with reduced elasticity.

The older we get, undesired aging effects can occur like: wrinkles, loss of skin elasticity, decrease in muscle tone, stiff joints and lower back pain that's due to degenerative changes of vertebrae and discs. Many of them are related to decreased water content in our bodies.

TIP #1: Drinking 8 glasses of water daily gives your muscles, spine and joints more energy and elasticity and it makes your skin look younger, too.

TIP #2: Add fresh fruits-- they contain high amounts of water and lots of vitamins!

Meghan's Nutrition Tips - How to Monitor Your Eating

Compliments of Meghan Kabatt, Nurse Practioner at NYP-Cornell Hospital NYC and CFM Teacher Training Apprentice

Savor your food and eat slowly, enjoying the taste and texture. Pay attention to what, when, why, and how you eat.

When you become aware of the cues that prompt you to eat you will have more control over what and how you're eating. Your "need" might be to relax or take a walk instead of mindlessly inhaling that extra helping.

Instructor Corner

As some of you may already know Mikiko Baba has decided to relocate back to Japan to be closer to her family. It has been a pleasure watching her flourish in our CFM Teacher Training program and become one of our most popular teachers. We've loved having her be part of the CFM team and she will be greatly missed. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors!
