Vote on Health Care Reform Repeal Postponed

 

At 11:00 AM ET on January 10th, President Obama called on Americans to observe a moment of silence for Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) and the other victims of the tragic shooting last weekend in Tucson, Arizona.

Just hours after the assassination attempt on Saturday, which killed 6 people and injured 13, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor postponed the planned vote to repeal health reform that had been scheduled for Wednesday, January 12.

Congressional Budget Office: Health Repeal Would Deepen Deficit

As the GOP gears up to make their first attempt at repealing the Affordable Care Act, the Congressional Budget Office reports success would not only result in 32 million more Americans without health insurance but also add approximately $230 billion to the federal deficit by 2021.

The ACA includes several provisions that establish Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) within Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP. Payment incentives aimed at lowering health care costs, slowing their rate of growth and improving the quality of care are at the heart of the ACO model. Beginning in 2012, medical providers under participating state Medicaid programs can form pediatric-specific ACOs under the Pediatric Demonstration Project. GOP Governors Seek Leeway to Cut Medicaid Rolls

Part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) includes a provision known as "maintenance of effort" (MOE), which requires states to maintain their Medicaid and CHIP eligibility and enrollment criteria through 2014. The MOE provision ensures low-income families can continue to access Medicaid and CHIP benefits for their children. In the face of wide-spread state budget crises, MOE has been faced with strong opposition, including that of 33 Republican governors and governors-elect who last week sent a letter to President Obama requesting the deletion of the MOE requirement from the federal health reform legislation.
