| Be a Smart Sheep: Our Customer Appreciation Program |
Here's how it works: For every $350 in fiber purchases (yarn, coned yarn, spinning fiber) you will receive a coupon good for 60 days for $25 off your next purchase. The coupon may be redeemed against ANY purchase - equipment, classes, needles, whatever. Further, each time you redeem a coupon you will be entered in an annual drawing to receive a really nice prize -- this year a set of four dish towels, handwoven by Clara and designed by Joan. The annual drawing will be held at our New Year's Day Party. Each time you make a fiber purchase your rewards status will print on your receipt. |

Greetings!
A tiny bit of news you should know:
Starting today and going through next week, it is our turn to get new sidewalks out front! This is exciting because when this project is done, downtown Lake Orion will be so much more inviting to stroll around and dine and shop. This is our 11th year in downtown and I have never once regretted choosing this location. I love the small town atmosphere and the fact that I can walk over to the bike shop to get help fixing a spinning wheel, I can walk to Elements or Tesori and buy a gift, I can stop in at Little Monsters toy store and get fun treats for the staff, I can get a Lake Orion bead for my bracelet at Mason's, Lucky's has special dietary food that honor Mariah's many allergies, and I can count on getting a seat on Friday night at CJs for a meal like mom would make. All within two or three walking minutes from our front door. How cool is that??? So, a little inconvience to make all this even better. Yup, fine by me! Since we are imposing this construction on you, however, I've included a coupon at the bottom of the newsletter for (are you ready for this???): 15% off one kind of yarn for a project (for example, 8 skeins of Shepherd's Wool to make a sweater, a ball of sock yarn, etc.) and 10% off any one other item of your choice. DETAILS ON THE COUPON.
By the way, if you are a Facebook user, pop over to Downtown Lake Orion and click LIKE to keep up with downtown happenings.
GETTING AROUND IN DOWNTOWN:
Our shop is located on Flint Street. The street to the north of us is Shadbolt and it will remain open during construction. Actually Shadbolt is a good street to take if you are coming in from M-24 with or without construction. Our cross street is Anderson. There is parking behind the building and on the side (we are fortunate to have that extra parking!). If you are coming from Orion Road, you may have to follow signs to get to us, but right now, Flint Street remains open coming from that direction. |

Sunday's Class: Weaving Vintage Towels | |
This is a class I've been cooking up for years. Over those years, I have collected a nice sampling of vintage textiles and we are going to use them as a basis to make our own NEW towels (or other fabric). Much of the class will be spent in describing the selected textiles so that they can be reproduced as designed. This old adage applies here: we have to know the rules before we can break them. We'll discuss period (art deco, art noveau, Bauhaus, etc.) and try to date some of the towels. In some cases we will use "linen testers" (those magnifiers that photographers used in days gone by to examine negatives) to create a thread by thread study of the weave structure. You need not be an experienced weaver to take this class - as long as you understand weaving and are familiar with the basics you'll do fine. Even if you are not in the least bit interested in vintage textiles, you can be inspired by them. No weaving will be done in class - that's the homework part!BTW, if you can't attend this weekend, the class will be repeated in the fall. |

New in the shop | | |
Met with another rep yesterday. Oooh la la! I spent three agonizing hours struggling over what yarns would fit best into my budget. I think I got something for everybody! We are getting a new chunky weight Noro called Nadeshiko with LOTS of angora in it. It has a beautiful halo. Shar and Suzanne urged me to get it (I kid you not!). Louisa Harding has two new yarns that inspired the staff: Grace Hand Beaded yarn with LOTS of beads and Simonetta mohair with a splash of flash. Both will be terrific for small, special projects. Now, the Nadeshiko, that should be a big sweater. If you aren't allergic to angora like I am (yes, I pout about that, but the itch is just not worth it!). You can expect all these yarns and more to hit our shelves in August and September. Are your needles ready?
A few weeks ago I met with our Kraemer yarn rep. We now have a nice selection of Tatamy Tweed in. One of the things I forgot to tell you is that they also have a very nice collection of patterns available for FREE download from their website. Check them out, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. |

Teaching
Have you seen the ads for Midwest Fiber and Folk? If so, you may have noticed that I'm teaching there. The festival is in the Chicago suburbs and worth taking a trip to see. Plus, there are some marvelous teachers in the line-up. Here's a link to learn more.
Speaking of Festivals
We'll be taking our show on the road three times this year:
Used looms
I have two gently used looms that need new homes. One is a Baby Wolf 4-now 4-later the other is a Mighty Wolf with or without a bench. Email me for details.
Daddy's Little Girl
I'm please to report that there's a new baby in the family. Isabelle was born on Monday to my son, Peter, and his wife, Jeannine. I'll be heading over to meet Izzy in a week or so. I'll also get to read her big brother Luke bedtime stories. Being a grandma is all its cracked up to be!
