Be a Smart Sheep: Our Customer Appreciation Program
Here's how it works: For every $350 in fiber purchases (yarn, coned yarn, spinning fiber) you will receive a coupon good for 60 days for $25 off your next purchase. The coupon may be redeemed against ANY purchase - equipment, classes, needles, whatever. Further, each time you redeem a coupon you will be entered in an annual drawing to receive a really nice prize including a $100 gift certificate and a handwoven "something" for the home. 2011's prize is a set of four dishtowels woven by Clara. The drawing will be held each year at our Annual New Year's Day Party. Each time you make a purchase your rewards status will print on your receipt. Complete details at HSW.

Dear (Contact First Name),

Spring is Here?

I know what it looks like when I look out the window: melting, brighter and balmier, and end-of-winter yucky snow. I have, however, lived in Michigan long enough to know that Mother Nature is probably toying with us and there will be more snow. Maybe even lots of it. One up side of that: we get to wear our handknit woolies for a few more weeks before setting them aside.

Luckily, spring has started coming in to the shop in the form of new yarn and it is bringing cheerfulness throughout. One of the yarns especially has had everybody oohing and aaahing. It is a 100% silk that is rainbow dyed and is quite lovely to behold. But - more on that later. While we've been putting out new yarns, we've also been rearranging and rethinking. This means more old yarn HAS to go, so stop in often to check out the sale bin. I am really (and I mean REALLY) cleaning house.

Demo Opportunity

If you'd like to share your love of fiber with others, Van Hoosen Farm in Rochester Hills is looking for people to demonstrate weaving, spinning, carding, crewel and knitting at their Spring on the Farm event, Saturday May 21 from 10 to 4. The contact person for the event is Michelle Dunham, the educational program coordinator for the Museum.  Her email is dunmamm@rochesterhills.org or via telephone at 248-841-2690.

Knit Michigan

Knit MIKnit Michigan 2011 is history, but the good our fundraising does is just beginning. This year we raised over $25,000 which exceeded what I dared hope for! Also, more than 500 chemo caps and other comfort items were donated and will be distributed to cancer centers around Michigan. Thanks to all who participated! Two Knit Michigan events for your calendar: Friday evening at 6:30, August 12 in Holly we will have a Chemo-Cap Knit-In at Genesys' Reunion with a Cause community event and Knit Michigan 2012 on Saturday, February 4 (always the first Saturday in February).

New Arrivals

Ella Rae Superwash
I've been looking for a nice superwash 100% wool yarn that is reasonably priced and spun with many plies. I have finally settled on the Ella Rae Classic Superwash. With 220 yards, it knits up at 5 sts = 1" on US 6 to 7 needles. These are the colors that are now in stock, we'll add more from time to time and will keep this yarn as a standard yarn in the store.

Araucania brings us a new 100% silk yarn named Chaiten that is hand-dyed and budget priced (for silk). Each skein has 310 yards, knits up at 5.5 sts on a US 6 and retails at $21.50. It has a nice hand and doesn't stick to your (rough winter) hands the way that some silk does. Because it is a brand-new yarn to Araucania, we only have two colors in right now, but more is expected soon.

Smiley Stripes

Snuggly Smiley Stripes is a happy yarn made to supplement the Snuggly Baby Bamboo which has become a real favorite. Machine washable in hot water (104° F) it is perfect for the little ones in your life. It is a DK weight yarn so there is plenty of pattern support. The colors are very vivid and cheerful.
Spinning Saturday is Back!

Dust those wheels off and come on in! We've given the day a new look: We will offer SPINNING HELP (you can use your Knitting Help card or pay $10 per session) from 10 to noon and SOCIAL SPINNING from 1 to 3 (or 4, when the shop closes) on the second Saturday of each month.

Here's what you can expect from the SPINNING HELP sessions: Debbie and Cherie will be on hand to help you achieve the yarn of your dreams. If you'd like to learn how to hand card or use combs, they can help you. If you need to know how to take care of your wheel, they can help you. Want to make novelty yarn? They can help. Reservations are requested by Thursday (two days before) and please tell us what you'd like assistance with so we can be prepared.

SOCIAL SPINNING is back and everyone is loving it! Reservations are not required. Just bring your wheel or spindle and join us for lively conversation and the opportunity to learn a little bit with the topic of the month. March's topic is "Plying" so you may want to come prepared with yarn that needs plying. As with the social knitting groups, we ask for a $5 donation toward the "heat and light" fund.
NEW! Rigid Heddle Weaving Group
Did you take our introductory RH class but haven't done much yet? Simply want to brush up on your skills? Well, dust off that loom and come to the RH playground. On the first Saturday afternoon of every month starting in APRIL, we will host "RH Weaving Help." Either Joan or Becca will be there to assist you with project planning, warping, or learning a new weaving technique. Gain confidence and put some dedicated weaving time into your month. $20 a visit. Reservations requested due to space considerations. Sessions limited to 8.

Lace

Hand-Knit Edging. I have always been intrigued by lace edgings, which the in spiration for our lace edging class being held 4/3. The neighbor that taught me to crochet, worked set after set of pillowcases and I loved watching her hands fly back and forth as she prettied up a pretty functional item. When I graduated from high school Hilda gave me a set of her pillowcases and they traveled with me for years.

My next memorable encounter with lace on pillow cases was not long after I opened the store. My mom gave me a pillow case with a knit trim that had been her mother's. Since my grandma passed about the time my mom entered elementary school, I never had the opportunity to meet her but I can feel her love in that very special pillowcase.

For years my mom's favorite knitting was to make lace doilies (one of which hangs in the shop's sitting room) -- they kept her interest and didn't cost her "an arm and a leg." I don't know if she made hundreds of doilies, but she certainly made dozens of them over the years before her eyes went bad. Now, as you know, mom knits socks. Lots of them. Anyway, during the "doily years" mom and I collected old lace patterns. Everthing seemed to collide a few months back when I decided I wanted to knit the same lace as in the pillowcase from grandma. I hit the pattern books and found the floral motif from the pillowcase and used it for the edging on the towel on the right.

In this day-long class (4/3) we will take a tour of some of the old patterns (bring yours if you have them), figure out what gauge yarn and needles makes you happiest and then select a pattern to knit. Maybe you'll create your own family heirloom.

Finally, a special thanks to Nancy Poettinger who hand stitched the hems on the towels and attached the lace.

Deb Tackles Socks. Deb loves knitting socks and she's a really good teacher. She'll be available to you every first and third Monday from 5 to 6:30 to help with your sock issues (whether you are stuck in a pattern or just want to knit socks with kindred spirits). Look for the Sock Support class in the knitting section of our website for details.

Because you've asked

You've probably been hearing in the news about credit and debit card fees charged to merchants. They are a big expense for a small company. I appreciate it when you ask -- and many of you do -- "What form of payment do you prefer?" Our answer, "Cash first, then checks, then debit cards, but we will always cheerfully accept credit cards." No matter how you choose to pay, we appreciate you keeping your business local.

Fiber Explorers

This class is just plain fun! I suppose it would best be described as a creativity class. Our last assignment was to create an object using non-traditional fibers. Jae wove an overshot piece using beaded chain (like that on dog tags or a light pull), Suzanne embellished packaging from a floral delivery to create a knitting bag, Diane limited herself to things she had at home and wove a container using strips cut from a cat food bag and I wove mug rugs using rubber bands, straws and pencils as the weft. Is what we do good for anything? Sometimes but not always, but it does get our minds "traveling to a different galaxy" often where we've never been before! Our current assignment is to portray "dream" and/or "outline" in fiber. We will start a new round of this class in the fall. Consider joining in the fun.

Happy Fibering!
