| Be a Smart Sheep: Our Customer Appreciation Program |
Here's how it works: For every $350 in fiber purchases (yarn, coned yarn, spinning fiber) you will receive a coupon good for 60 days for $25 off your next purchase. The coupon may be redeemed against ANY purchase - equipment, classes, needles, whatever. Further, each time you redeem a coupon you will be entered in an annual drawing to receive a really nice prize including a $100 gift certificate and a handwoven "something" for the home. 2010's prize is a set of four dishtowels woven by Clara. The drawing will be held each year at our Annual New Year's Day Party. Each time you make a purchase your rewards status will print on your receipt. Complete details at HSW. | |

Greetings!
If your life is like mine, you never have enough time to squeeze everything in. Then, at the end of the day finding the energy to think about big fiber projects just isn't there. My current solution: small projects. The last couple weeks I've been knitting old-fashioned lace trims for samples for an upcoming class (March 2011). I've been having fun! I don't have to think too hard, they don't take much time or space and the end results are certainly pretty. Perhaps your small project is socks, or baby items or a hat. I like to think of them as "baby bear" knitting projects: they are juuuuust right for summer.
Music and spinning and knitting
Just a reminder that Lake Orion's Gazebo Concert Series begins next week and runs through August. Every Wednesday evening at 7:00 the downtown merchants bring you a different musical group for a free concert. Grab your folding chair and a "lap project" and join us. For the schedule of concerts, click here.
Once again WDIV is helping local businesses spice up the summer with a good-hearted competition (only one vote per person per category is allowed). Vote for us as your favorite Fiber Arts Shop here. Once you vote, follow the instructions to post your vote to your Facebook or Twitter account and help us spread the word. As always, we thank you for your support.

These lovely one-piece shawl pins are tiny works of art. Lightweight and shiny in polished brass or silver, they add the finishing touch to your hand knit or woven shawls and wraps.
I recently wrote about Ella Rae Lace Merino. I knew when the rep brought it out of his bag that it would be a hit. So far, it has been flying off the shelf. Now we've got a sample knit up in it and I'm even more in love! The stitch definition is exquisite - the roundness of the yarn really flatters the stitch pattern. The pattern is from Ann Norling, Six Lacy Scarves.

Piper and Elliot follow behind in the bike stroller. |
Each year I subscribe to a sock sample program from Opal - we get one sample sock in each colorway from most of the collections, no pairs. Well a few weeks ago Ann's son, Elliott, fell and broke his leg. She came in with him lamenting that she had been shopping and couldn't find him any cool socks to cover the cast so she had decided to knit him one. Having been a young mom myself, I couldn't imagine how she'd find the time to finish even one sock before his leg was healed, so I offered up a couple of the Opal socks. Ann's happy, Elliott is happy and I think it is the perfect use for a one of a kind sock! |

Learn to Weave
We have to opportunities to learn to weave coming up in July. These are multi-shaft classes where you learn how to dress a loom, read patterns and plan projects and weave fabric of your own making. We often get asked by school teachers to have classes over the summer so they can attend during their off time. Well, now you can! Don't wait until you retire to learn. Start now - you need not own a loom at first, you can use ours. I am so very glad I didn't wait to learn weaving until I retired (which was my original plan). You never know what tomorrow will bring. So, as Nike says, "Just do it." Come weave with us. You'll have a blast. I promise!

This sweater is very, very proudly worn. A while back I got up on my soapbox in the newsletter about working gauge swatches - all because some of the Tuesday night knitting group were having problems knitting sweaters that fit them. Janet took my arguments for swatching to heart, worked her samples and made the right choices and now she has this beautiful sweater knit from Elsebeth Lavold Bambool following a pattern from Knitting Magazine. Janet, it fits and looks great! Nice job. PS Janet has appointed herself the gauge guru of Tuesday night when I'm not there - she's serious about this!

Anneliese finally knit herself something. This top looks terrific on her! It is made from Wach'I pima cotton and silk using the Syringa pattern from Knitter's Summer 2010. She liked the yarn so well, she's using it for her next project - another top for her.

Su fell in love with some variegated slubby mill end yarn we got in recently. She'd been dreaming of "reweaving" a favorite linen dress and the planets collided and voila! Slubby plus 8/2 cotton and she's woven and sewn a recreation of her favorite dress. For the weavers out there, here's a closeup of the fabric:

Fireworks! Lake Orion fireworks are at dusk on Saturday. Perhaps we'll see you downtown.
Holiday hours Closed Sunday, July 4, and Monday, July 5. Normal summer business hours after that until Labor Day weekend.
With appreciation
I love hearing from you after you read this newsletter. Your comments make me feel like writing it is a good use of my time. Some weeks the newsletters come easier than others. Some I can get done in a couple hours. Sometimes I drag my feet and it can take several days (that would be this issue!). It is fun to see which newsletters get more comments. The chair socks (if you don't remember them, check our website) generated a lot of emails. But, I think last issue's story about our graduates got the most comments ever. Just like me, you seem to really connect to and appreciate the young folks that work here. Together we are all making a difference for them. Thank you for doing your part in "raising up" our young ladies.
Happy Fibering!
