Be a Smart Sheep: Our Customer Appreciation Program
Here's how it works: For every $350 in fiber purchases (yarn, coned yarn, spinning fiber) you will receive a coupon good for 60 days for $25 off your next purchase. The coupon may be redeemed against ANY purchase - equipment, classes, needles, whatever. Further, each time you redeem a coupon you will be entered in an annual drawing to receive a really nice prize including a $100 gift certificate and a handwoven "something" for the home. 2010's prize is a set of four dishtowels woven by Clara. The drawing will be held each year at our Annual New Year's Day Party. Each time you make a purchase your rewards status will print on your receipt. Complete details at HSW.

Greetings!

Yesterday summer hit me. My fingers itched to knit with cotton. I grabbed some Debbie Bliss Eco Cotton and started to knit a hat I'm calling the "Take a Hike Hat." It will keep the sun off the ears and can easily roll up and be tucked in a pack, pocket or purse. Before I knew it, I was halfway done. How fun! Hope you are enjoying your summer knitting, too!

Trading Spaces

We had another shake-up in our space allocation at the shop. Our weaving studio has swapped space with our classroom. The classroom is now located in the back of the shop behind closed doors, near the bathroom and with lots of beautiful natural light. It's quieter and, while smaller, seems more spacious. It also lets everyone see what the weavers are working on because the looms are now "in public." Make sure to check their work next time you are in. There's some very nice weaving happening here!

Visitors

A couple weeks ago a small group of our neighbors came for a visit. Sunny Day Preschool children came to learn about spinning and weaving. Each of them got to weave, peddle the spinning wheel (while I worked the wool to make yarn) and make a couple sheep to take with them. It was fun for all!

What's New

OpalOpal Cotton 2010
Soft colors are the hallmark of this newest Opal sock yarn collection. Made from "30% supersoft cotton intimately blended with 32% polyamid, then twisted with 38% superwash wool," this yarn feels great. We have full-sized samples in every colorway. Come in quick - we only have four of each colorway in stock!

LegacyNew Lace
From Brown Sheep Co. Legacy Lace - a blend of 75% superwash wool and 25% nylon, this is machine washable, has a very nice hand, and comes in a generous hank that measures 1,500 yards - enough for just about any average shawl with a bit left over for repairs and swatching. It comes in a limited colorway but the colors they chose are the most popular shawl colors. We have all in stock except the golden yellow. US size 1 needles recommended.

LacyMerinoFrom Ella Rae/Knitting Fever Lace Merino is a tightly twisted fine machine washable wool that has been hand dyed in colorways that are very pleasing to the eye. Lace Merino comes in 100 gm skeins that measure 460 yards. It is not as fine as the Legacy Lace - US size 4 needles are recommended.

The Knit Kit
Knit Kit
New in the notions department is the Knit Kit. This handy-dandy "Swiss Army Knife" for knitters holds the seven tools you use most often as a knitter: crochet hook, thread cutter, locking counter, 5 ft. tape measure, stitch markers, tip protectors, and collapsible scissors (TSA Compliant) all put together in a very durable, compact, easy to locate device. Great for gift giving and easy to find in your knitting bag ... plus, it's cute!

FishThe Fish Sweater?
People see this class listed and ask us what a Fish Sweater is. Others see this odd looking piece of knitting hanging in the shop and ask, what is THAT? Well, The Fish Sweater is an odd looking sampler that teaches all the elements of making a seamless sweater. It is from a book written by Jacqueline Fee that Marge (from Tuesday and Thursday Knitting Help) introduced me to eons ago. When I made this fish sweater, I was a knitting novice - Sharlene was still picking on be about my less-than-skilled knitting and finishing. It was this sampler that really made me look at knitting differently and inspired me to become a better knitter. If you are an "early" knitter, you should take this class. It may not seem fruitful to make a sampler, but it is time well spent and I guarantee you that you will be glad you made the effort.

Heritage Gallery
Here is Shar modeling her new sweater. It was a surprise gift from Jacque (Joy calls those "now presents"). Made in Clip cotton yarn, the pattern is the Livy cardigan by Isabelle Boutin and can be purchased from Patternfish.

S & J

Here Stacey models Carrolann's latest knitting. Carrolann is camera shy! This is a shawl from the Lavish Lace book and it is knit from Ty-Dy sock yarn. Nice job!

Finally, Joanne, one of our yarn reps brought this in as a sample. She represents both the pattern designer and yarn. The pattern is the Wrap Me Up shawl from Knitting at Knoon and it is made with Opal Sock Yarn. I want one!!!

Graduation

Hard to believe it, but our girls are growing up. A week from Friday four Heritage young ladies are graduating from Lake Orion High. My daughter, Mariah. My "adopted" daughter, Becca - who has worked here since she was in Middle School and Anneliese's granddaughters Desi and Sibo. Desi works on Sunday and Sibo works behind the scenes keeping the shop clean. And, then there's the newest member of the crew, Gabby. Becca hand-picked Gabby to replace her and Sophia when the time comes. Gabby is also graduating, but will be going to college locally so she will still be around.

I do enjoy nurturing the next generation. Sophia has been working here since shortly after she graduated from High School and she graduated from OU last summer - now she's waiting to hear on her acceptance to the military (as an officer in the Air Force). I first met Sophia when she was 14 and I taught her to spin at a fiber festival. She took to it like a duck to water. Eventually, we taught her to weave, but spindle spinning is still her favorite method of "playing with fiber."

Becca first came here when she was 9 or 10. She was homeschooled and was studying weaving through their home school group. When she was 11 she started to study with me and came to the shop to weave every Friday. Now she's turning 18 and has been around the US with me taking weaving classes and studying weaving for the last five years. Two summers ago she did an internship with the National Museum of the American Coverlet in Pennsylvania. It has been fun to watch her grow and develop her love for not only weaving, but also and especially teaching.

Desi started coming here while her Oma, Anneliese, was taking a week-long weaving class several summers ago. While Anneliese wove, we taught Desi to knit and spin. It wasn't long before they were both working here! Since then Desi has learned to weave and makes incredibly intricate macrame bracelets. It was a natural that her twin, Sibo, would work here, too, so when the cleaning job came up, she took it.

Mariah, well, she has had to put up with sharing me with everyone else, with late nights at the store, and working even when I was home. Yes, she can spin, knit and weave, but she's more into history and books (and anime and manga).

Next Friday our young ladies "walk" at Meadowbrook. There will be a great many of us cheering them on as they begin the "rest of their lives." I'm proud of each of them and, along with the entire staff, wish them well as they venture out into the bigger world!

Happy Fibering!
