| Be a Smart Sheep: Our Customer Appreciation Program |
Here's how it works: For every $350 in fiber purchases (yarn, coned yarn, spinning fiber) you will receive a coupon good for 60 days for $25 off your next purchase. The coupon may be redeemed against ANY purchase - equipment, classes, needles, whatever. Further, each time you redeem a coupon you will be entered in an annual drawing to receive a really nice prize including a $100 gift certificate and a handwoven "something" for the home. 2010's prize is a set of four dishtowels woven by Clara. The drawing will be held each year at our Annual New Year's Day Party. Each time you make a purchase your rewards status will print on your receipt. Complete details at HSW. | |

| Greetings!
Trend Watching
I have a couple friends who regularly send "good stuff" to my email box. One of these, Diane, is an interior designer and is constantly watching the latest colors, trends, and fiber related news for her industry. When it overlaps with knitting/spinning/weaving, she shares her findings. One of the recent fun ones was a site on the Internet that sells chair socks. Yes, you read right: socks for chairs! I thought they were just a hoot and had to get mom to knit some up. If you find them as funny as I did and want to knit some for your favorite chair, you can click on the photo for a link to the free pattern. This lucky chair is currently residing in our front window. Check it out and smile next time you are in the area! |

It is kind of a slow time for new things, so I have one old yarn to remind you of and a colorful treat!
The "old" yarn has been around for a long time, but it is still a favorite. Schaefer's Laurel is a worsted weight, hand-dyed cotton made in the USA. It is wonderful for baby or for quick summer tops. It feels simply splendid when knit (or woven, for that matter). It is a high-quality pima cotton that is well-made and shouldn't pill. Each skeins weighs a hefty 8 ounces and has 400 yards. Laurel knits up at 4 to 4.5 sts/inch. We have a range of colors from sophisticated to fun!
Color. I let Christel loose in the dye room last week and she came up with these colors. They should be reskeined and on the shelf in the next day or two. This was a special purchase of mohair boucle that has a bit smaller loops than we usually dye. I'm very pleased with the colors we got. Yummy! My fingers are itching to weave with it. I can see a lovely scarf or throw. It comes in 500 yard skeins and would knit up like a worsted weight yarn. Eight ends per inch should be about right for weaving. |
| Inspiration surrounds us |
|
|
Last Friday I had the pleasure of visiting our state's capitol. We spent the better part of an hour roaming the (empty) halls. I found one exciting bit of inspiration after another. The visit inspired me to start a notebook of the photos (and magazine clippings) I've taken over the years simply because I liked them (not because they were a person or a landmark or trip memorabilia). You may know what I mean: photos of rocks on the seashore, the canopy of trees, clouds, flowers, architectural bits, moss on a castle, tree bark. Within these treasures are colors just waiting to be discovered and translated to yarn, weaving patterns to be drawn, Fair Isle to be knit. Here are just a few of the shots I took Friday. See what I mean?

Click on the class calendar on the class page on our website and see what is starting and what is already underway or ongoing.
Weavers: we still have space in Kati Reeder Meek's Lustrous Linen class. Most of the patterns are for 4-shaft looms and the weaving is not difficult. In class you will learn not only about weaving with linen and finer threads, but also warping with a trapeze and weaving ergonomically (bade those back aches farewell!).
Time to Tat! If you've always wanted to try tatting, now's the time! Dorothy is infinitely patient and really knows her stuff. Tatting is easy work to carry (I have mine in an old eyeglass case from my grandpa) and nice to use for embellishing - clothing, handkerchiefs, or collars. Tatted Christmas ornaments make nice presents - watch for that class coming up in the fall.

Sit & Knit
One of my favorite things about this shop is its sense of community. Fiber shops are notorious for their ambiance and this one is no exception. After 10 years, I still get warm fuzzies when I walk in the door. I love being here. Many of you feel just the way I do and have made that clear by creating your special groups at our Sit and Knit sessions. I should say, that you are also welcome to spin or even weave on your rigid heddle during these sessions. All are welcome and there's no charge. Come gather around the table with us: Tuesday and Friday evening, Wednesday morning or Sunday afternoon. It's good for the soul (and cabin fever!).
Happy Fibering!
