Greetings!

I must admit, I'm enjoying the break from writing our newsletter every week - it is giving me more knitting time! Even had time to get started on my Christmas knitting. That's a real treat. Usually I plan, find the pattern and yarn and after Christmas I put the yarn back on the shelf after having shopped at the store for that special someone. This year I vowed to actually get a little knitting done. How's your holiday knitting coming?

Art Show
Art showA very heartfelt thank you to all who participated in our fiber art show. We raised over $1100 that will be donated in Maureen Keenan's memory to the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center for melanoma research. Over the years we've been doing this fundraiser, we've contributed nearly $7000 to U-M for cancer research. Pictured here is the award ceremony on Sunday afternoon. Below, a few of the winners (L to R, Top to bottom: Sybil - modeling the Grand Prize, Kyla, Anneliese, Donna, Jill, Sybil. Winners

SallyCongratulations to Sally Pituch for being the Art Show Grand Prize winner. Sally submitted a gorgeous green and purple Norwegian cardigan (very non-traditional colors!). Her sweater was knit as a result of a class she took here with Arnhild earlier this year.

What's New

GermanMost of what has come in new since our last newsletter was simply new colors of old favorites. Well, then then there was a lot of sock yarns from assorted companies in a multitude of patterns. Perhaps most memorable was the release of a new family of 4 ply Opal. The Schafpate collection promotes a "buy local" concept. The yarn is made through an all-German supply chain beginning with merino sheep at the Nature Preserve BiosphäreAlb in South Germany. The wool is processed in the Bremer Woll-Kämmerei AG in Bremen and spun in  the Zwickauer Kammgarn GmbH. Finally, it is printed into sock yarn by TUTTO Wolfgang Zwerger GmbH in Hechingen. Now you can get it here, in not-so-local-to-Germany Lake Orion! We have real-live samples to touch and hold. Let us know what colors you like best and we'll order extra. Currently we only have two of each color in stock.
Schacht's Monthly Special

Buy a Schacht Spinning Matchless or Lady Bug Wheel during the month of October and get a free copy of Maggie Casey's Start Spinning video.
In this informative instructional video, well-known spinning instructor Maggie Casey teaches Interweave Knits magazine's curious-minded editor Eunny Jang how to spin.  Learn everything you need to know about how to process raw wool into beautiful yarn using Schacht products. This video is a perfect companion for the first-time wheel owner or for those who want a refresher course.

Cherie sent this photo in. If you are counting, this is the third Fair Isle hat she's made from the same pattern - our My First Fair Isle Hat. She took my class at Michigan Fiber Festival and hit the ground running! It is for her nephew who insisted that everything be "blue." Great color choices!

Classes that have been postponed or cancelled
Several of our multi-session classes did not get enough participants to be held. I never know if I've scheduled them "too early" in the season or if the interest isn't there or if budgets are stretched thin. No matter, these are all good classes that are worth investing in! In particular: Focus on Fit, Focus on Fair Isle, Spinning Boot Camp, and Weaving Boot Camp. The SBC will be cancelled this year and replaced with topical spinning classes. The two focus classes will be rescheduled. WBC has been cancelled. It will be replaced with some weaving seminars (either one or two days in duration). Watch the website and this newsletter for announcements of the changes.

Fun Fiber Stuff on the Web
This month several interesting tidbits have come my way that I thought were worthy of sharing. What do spider silk, art and goat's milk have in common and how do they relate to fiber? Read and listen to these links and find out!

And, this from Liz at Schacht Spindle Co. about a project she participated in in Loveland, CO: The Downtown Scarf Project is up!  Here is a link to the slide show and my blog post about it:

Baskets: Reuse is better than recycle
Yesterday Su had a brainstorm that involved putting our balls of roving for spinning and felting into baskets rather than plastic bags. This was a great idea because it looks homey and the wool can breathe. Problem is we ran out of baskets. So, I'm asking you: do you have any baskets hanging around that you'd like to donate to the cause? We'd appreciate any contributions and will repay you with our undying gratitude.

Happy Fibering!
