Greetings!

Hard to believe that fall is almost here - tho' folks up north tell me that August is finally here! No matter, snow will be flying before we know it. Are you ready? I'm starting to organize my Christmas knitting list. I probably ought to be knitting as well, but I just haven't gotten there yet!

Art Show
Just a reminder that this is the month of our Annual Fiber Arts Show - it's all in great fun and is for a good cause. Details on the website.

BiWeekly Newsletters
Okay, I admit it. After three years of writing a weekly newsletter I am getting a little burned out! So, I have decided to publish our newsletter every other week. This change will still give you plenty of notice of classes and provide me an opportunity to bring you "news you can use." In between newsletters, you can get your Heritage "fix" on Facebook - search for Heritage and become a FAN. New arrivals and shop notices will be posted their on a regular basis (perhaps not daily, but regular!). I'm an avid fan of Facebook in my personal life, so bringing Heritage to Facebook is a natural for me.

What's New

It is that time of year when new yarns come in on a regular basis. While I was out on vacation the UPS man continued to come - imagine that! I must admit that I missed seeing the riot of color when the boxes were opened and the chaos that ensued until all the everything found a new home. Here are a couple of examples of what's new for fall:

Twice

Elsebeth Lavold Twice Tweed
Marge has already declared this yarn a winner and is half done with her first project.  The yarn is spun in Holland and is made from 100% recycled wool, nylon and cotton (42/32/26%) using a patented manufacturing process that saves water and energy and has no discharge to the environment. Non polluting dye is also used. The yarn looks good, feels good and is gentle on the environment.  It is also gentle on the pocketbook at just $6.50 per 82 yard skein and it knits up quickly on US 8 to 9 needles at a gauge of 15 to 16 sts per 4". Lots of great colors, too!

Merino 5
Crystal Palace Merino 5
I bought this in small quantities thinking of knitting hats, mittens and scarves and for the children in your life. The colors make you smile! Another great use is as an accent - stretch the colors by marrying it to a solid color and really show off the brightness.  Machine washable, skeins measure 110 yards, knit up on a US 7 to 8 at 20 sts per 4" and are almost too pretty to knit.

Felted Soap

Jenny's Felted Soap
I know this is a perennial favorite, but it is always nice to be reminded of good things. Jen did an especially colorful job making soaps for us this time around. She went beyond sheep, alpaca and lavender to create colorful flowers. Notice, too, the little bag made from the wool after the soap is gone - it is too sweet! These soaps make great hostess gifts. Not "just for pretty," these are hardworking soaps that feel great to use. Treat yourself and treat a friend!

Starmore

Alice Starmore's Book of Fair Isle Knitting
Several years ago I bought this book for about $100 on eBay and felt I got my money's worth. Now, you can have it in your library in its latest iteration for just $24.95. Of all the Fair Isle Books in my library, this is the one I turn to most often. If you are a Fair Isle aficionado or collector of knitting books, you'll want to own this for yourself. In between the covers you'll find a bit about the history of Fair Isle knitting, discussions of color and pattern, a pattern library, patterns and - my favorite part - instructions for making and sizing your own Fair Isle garments.

Spotlight on Crochet:
I am enthusiastic about crochet. We've got a couple crochet classes coming up that are worth looking into. Why crochet? It is a nice break from knitting, it perfectly compliments knitting, it is a good first step toward continental style knitting for English-style knitters, you can make pretty things. Oh yes, did I mention it is faster than knitting - you can make that baby blanket for a gift is a portion of the time it would take to knit it! Finally, it is fun. It is how I first learned to create a piece of fabric. I crocheted before I knit as a child and, coupled with macramé, it provided the basis for my first craft business: selling macramé belts and crocheted snoods. Hey, it was the 1970s! Check the website for a crochet class that will fit your schedule. I think you'll enjoy Sue - she's a nice lady and a patient teacher.

Fred Family Photo Jordan Valley
L to R: Fred driving Cal and Tim; this year's family photo from our Labor Day Weekend campout; a pretty spot on the Jordan Valley Pathway.

I did something really, really unusual for me at the end of the summer: I actually took a vacation. I spent many hours hiking in the Jordan Valley, visiting family and friends, and enjoying watching flames lapping at logs in our fire pit. I came back rested and recharged. The time away gave me a much-needed break and allowed me to recharge my batteries, which is good because we're working on some significant projects here in the shop:

We're making a dedicated weaving room. I'm giving up my overly large office and turning it over to the weavers. Now, looms will be set up all the time and will not have to move. They won't crowd the classroom or clutter the dyeroom. Weaving tools will be hung on pegboard, ready for use. Shop rigid heddle looms will have permanent homes on racks in the weaving room. Yes, this is very exciting.

I've hired an operations manager. Stacey is going to help me keep things organized around here and be our "out front" go-to-woman. I feel so much better already knowing that she's working on our to-do list and know that her work will make your Heritage experience even better. Stacey is mom to three elementary school boys so she'll be working during school hours, which perfectly suits the schedule around here. Next time you are in, be sure to say hello to Stacey and welcome her to the new position.

We're going on-line by the end of the year if it kills me! Software is in place and we've been working for several months behind the scenes toward this goal. This has been a goal of mine for more than five years. While I know that the best Heritage experience is to be had right here in the shop, there are many of you who don't live close who need a good source for all things fiber. I also realize that sometimes it is nice to shop while in your pj's watching tv (gotta love wireless Internet and laptops).

Congratulated to Deb Harowitz
Deb has worked in the shop for about five years - currently she's here on Fridays. During the rest of the week she's a business woman in her own right. Deb recently opened her own Etsy store and I thought you might like to take a peek: www.seaairarts.etsy.com.

Happy Fibering!
