Art Show
How's your entry for our art show coming along? The prizes we have received so far have been stuffed into a window display - come and see the great stuff that has been donated by: Arnhild, XRX, Crystal Palace Yarns, Skacel, Brown Sheep, Cottage Creations, Jaggerspun, Bryson, Henry's Attic, Knitcellaneous, Mountain Colors, Schaefer Yarn, and Sheepy Hollow. Remember, 100% of the proceeds are donated to U-M to support cancer research.
Girls Nite and Spinning Group
Just a reminder that these two events will happen, even though it is Labor Day weekend. We know that everyone doesn't head "up north" and those that stay behind still could use an infusion of good conversation and knitting/spinning.
Girls Nite: Friday, 9/4 from 7 to 10 p.m.
Spinning Group: Saturday, 9/5 from 10 to noon (or until everyone goes home) |
| What's New |
|
|
Restock and new colors of Crystal Palace's hot new sock yarn Mini Mochi.

Knitting Fever's new Indulgence sock yarn - a blend of merino and nylon that is incredibly touchable and the colors are bright and perky!
Just in time for guild and knitting group gift giving, a trio of new accessories that retail for under $10. Scissors, Scissor fobs and the micro light.

Louet's new Jane floor loom is now on display in the store. This is the 40 cm version, there is also a 70 cm version. It is well made, versatile, and folds to carry with its own built-in handle. This loom, by-the-way, is named for Jane Stafford with whom I took classes earlier this month. Jane is as innovative and practical as her namesake loom!

A subtitle might be, "Joan steps up on her soap box AGAIN."
Have you seen the movie Pay It Forward?
It's not enough to just enjoy a craft (at least for me). It is also important to perpetuate the craft and its nuances. This week we hosted a weaving class for kids aged 5 to 9. I started two seven-year olds with backstrap weaving because it seemed a powerful place to start. (For the cynical, it also keeps them in one place - tied to the wall!!!)
I highly recommend sharing your craft with a young person. Becca started weaving with me at age 11. At 14 she became an employee, at 16 she started teaching rigid heddle. In a few days she turns 17 and enters her senior year in high school. She has her sights set on a career in textiles. While I realize that not all kids will take to textiles like she has, there is a chance you can at least ignite a life-time love.
Who started you? I grew up the daughter of a knitter and sewer - the sewing machine is still in mom and dad's living room, and her socks adorn our sock room here at the shop. However, it was our retired neighbor who really cemented my love for fiber. Hilda supplemented her retirement with crochet and embroidery. She spent hours teaching me and helping me fix my mistakes. Of all she taught me, I remember one thing most clearly - her words of wisdom about how long to cut your embroidery thread (no more than 18"): "Remember, the turtle wins the race." She also taught me that the back side is as important as the front. Which was reinforced by my 3D design teacher at CCS: "You and God know what's on the inside." |

| Sharlene weaves |
|
Why is this newsworthy? Shar has been working at Heritage longer than anyone else except for me. She has steadfastly refused to weave, dismissing it as, "Too fussy."
The problem is she's seen how pretty woven items are and everyone else seemed to be having fun weaving. Not to be left behind, Sharlene finally gave in. Last week she bought a loom and Becca and I helped her get started. Yesterday she brought in the finished shawl! Duck to water??? Don't you love her smile? |

Vacation and the newsletter
This weekend is our fiber retreat on Bois Blanc Island at Insel Haus. Following that, I'll be camping (hiding!) in the north woods through Labor Day with a wheel, loom and plenty of knitting. I've decided that my break should include a week off from the newsletter, so look for your next edition after Labor Day. Enjoy the end of your summer - I KNOW I'll be enjoying mine!
Happy Fibering!
