5th Annual Fiber Art Show!

Yes, the art show is worth shouting about! To date we have raised more than $6,000 to support cancer research at the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center. This year the proceeds will be used to support melanoma research. Every penny (100%) of the money raised is passed on to help the cause.

Here's how it works . . . you pay a small fee to enter your piece in the show. At least 50% of the fiber used in the project must have been purchased at Heritage. Once the show is hung, send your friends in to vote - it's just $1 a vote. Prizes are awarded for people's choice (that's the people you send in to vote for you!) and judge's choice (that's where we invite experienced teachers in to judge). The grand prize is a handspun and handwoven shawl that is on display in the shop now.

Here's the page on our website that has a link to an art show flier and the art show registration form. Please join in the fun!
Focus on Fit Class
From Jae, Focus on Fit instructor:

When it comes to knitting a sweater, the number of decisions that have to be made before you even work your first stitch can be overwhelming - which pattern, what size needles, which yarn to use, and more. Whew!  If you make it through those decisions, you face achieving the right gauge, and choosing the right pattern size. Add the time and money that is invested in a hand knit sweater, and it is enough to make a person decide that hats or socks are the only things to knit.

Knitting a sweater that fits is easy if you have the answers before you need them.
  • Want to use a different yarn than what the pattern was written for? Learn what to look for when substituting yarn.
  • Not getting the required gauge? Discover how to make the "wrong" gauge work for you.
  • Not sure what size you should knit? Learn what all those numbers really mean and how to easily find the size that fits you.
  • Your size isn't included in the pattern? There are simple techniques that can be used to alter a pattern without having to redesign it. Sometimes you can even avoid math!

Focus on Fit will lead you through the choices that are made when knitting a sweater. We'll talk about how yarn, gauge, and fit are related. We'll learn how different sweater styles require different sizes for the same person. We'll also discover how to fix some simple fit issues without having to rip out or start over. The tips and techniques shared in Focus on Fit will provide you with the answers you need to knit a great fitting sweater. And if you decide to stick with hats or socks, it will help you with those too!

Focus on Fit starts 9/29 - come join Jae and get your questions answered!
New in the store
Paternayan yarn! Traditionally used for needlepoint, Paternayan is also excellent for tapestry weaving and intarsia. By fall, we will be putting kits together with it for Kathryn Alexander's Color on Color scarf in the Scarf Style book. We currently have about 60 or 70 colors of this yarn. I will continue adding until we have all 400+ colors. At just 9 yards and less than $1 a skein, it is perfect for so many uses. If you've never worked with Paternayan, I think you'll like it - the wool is extremely high quality. Additionally, it can be "stripped" from three ply to one or two ply, giving almost infinite blending options. And, finally, if you've knit a garment with bulky or loosely spun yarn that needs seaming, this is an excellent yarn to use for seaming as it is spun worsted and is smooth and strong.

Speaking of colors. Our fall shipment of Jamieson Spindrift will make it's first appearance next week at Michigan Fiber Fest. Once it arrives, we will have all of the colors of Spindrift available . . . and they just added more than 30 colors to the line (see photo). This is very exciting news for us Fair Isle knitters. My fingers are itching!!!

Heritage Gallery
This week's gallery photo was taken by Jacque who was at Sunday Sit and Knit when Jason came in and knew I'd want to capture this ensemble in our Gallery. Thanks Jacque!

Meet Jason from Mt. Clemens.  He knit his scarf and hat using Shephard's wool. Also knit, but not pictured are flip-top mittens to match. The ensemble is his own design inspired by The Harmony Guides: Cables & Arans book.

Heritage in the News
One of our rigid heddle projects was recently published by Interweave's Handwoven magazine as a project of the month for June on their website. Click here and scroll down a bit to the pink scarf. That's us!

And, Knitting Daily ran a piece last month (7/20) on a pillow I designed that combined weaving on the rigid heddle and knitting. Here's a link to it and the original clip that ran on Knitting Daily TV during its first season.

Bring your own project or show your library card at Heritage Spinning and Weaving in the Village of Lake Orion and get 15% off any of the special "OTPL Knitting Circle"  kits (yarn and pattern) during the months of September and October. Our knitting circle is ideal for any level knitter; however, basic knitting skills are required as this is not an instructional class. Please call 248.693.3001 to register.
