Greetings!

A couple of weeks ago a long-time Heritage cheerleader, Pat Kreiling, forwarded me this comment that ran in her Oakland Knitting Guild's newsletter. It tickled me to the bottom of my toes:
Jerri wrote: We spent several days in Santa Fe and did wander up to Taos one day. Stopped very
briefly in La Lana Wools there - Heritage has that shop beat hands down. Much bigger choice of roving and yarns in Lake Orion.
We work hard to make Heritage your shop, so it is always a treat to hear nice words like this from you.

Also, congratulations to Pat, who was elected President of her guild last week. Being an officer in a guild isn't an easy job, but it is a good thing to do for all knitters. Good luck, Pat!
Fiber Retreat
Last year I decided that I was discontinuing doing retreats at Insel Haus. Not for lack of desire, but for lack of energy. Well, the desire has overtaken me. I've scheduled one for the last weekend in August - the weekend before Labor Day. This will be the first time we've gone up over the summer season since starting doing the retreats five (six?) years ago.

If you've never been, you should know that they are a great amount of fun. You can be guaranteed at least one good belly laugh. The probability that you will learn a new fiber technique is high. You will make new friends and knit into the night, or get up early and enjoy the peace of a cup of coffee while watching the deer frolic in the mists over the meadow.

This time around we are focusing on finishing projects. Some people will find that they'd like to finish one of Christa's designs, so you can work with her during her designated help times. Don't have one of her projects on the needles? Well, we'll look the other way while you start one, if that is what you'd like to do - just make arrangements before you go so you have the supplies you need. Or, you can choose to work with me on any project with which you may need a little help. The following meals are provided: Friday dinner; Saturday breakfast, lunch and pizza; Sunday brunch and dinner, and Monday breakfast.

Limited to 20 guests.
Private rooms (waiting list only): $350
Regular room (roommate and room requests will be honored if possible): $295
Date: August 28 through August 31 (three nights)
If an extended stay is desired, please contact Insel Haus directly at 231 634-7393.

Friends of Heritage Gallery
Several very cool things this week. What I find neat is that they are in three different fiber areas:

Ana
This is Ana's "leftover" blanket. The colored squares are all mitred blocks of leftover sock yarn. It was fun identifying the yarns used! This certainly took a lot of work, but it is a very, very stunning piece.

Tablet Weaving
Sonya wove these three bands - her first stab at tablet (card) weaving which she's teaching herself from books. Didn't she do a great job? Sonya has been playing with "small loom" weaving recently. Next up: the inkle. It will be fun to see what she comes up with!

Jae's Yarn
This is Jae. She has told me for years that she is not a spinner. Well, guess what? She may not be a spinner, but she can spin. A knitter who makes yarn. This is her first real spindle spun yarn. The roving is Northern Lights from Louet. So, for the record: Jae does NOT have a new hobby (but I'm still glad to see her playing with a spindle!).

Classes
Don't forget: click on the class calendar on the class page on our website and see what is starting and what is already underway or ongoing.

Class Spotlight:
Learn to weave on the Rigid Heddle. Saturday, 6/13. If you've always been curious about weaving but haven't wanted to make the commitment to buying a loom without satisfying your curiosity, this class is for you. The rigid heddle loom is a simple loom that is easy to learn and quick to warp. Becca will take you through all the steps you need to know to weave independently. Come play, have fun, learn with others. Spots are still available!

Photo Shoot
Shoot . . .

Many of you have been waiting for quite some time for our patterns. Well, yesterday we got one step closer to having them ready to release. Here Scott Orser crawls around on the floor shooting socks. It was a wonderful afternoon. Scott rounded up models and we took photos of nearly 30 different knit items for which I've written patterns. The photos he took are beautiful and inspiring. You can see a few of them here. By early July they will be printed and ready for sale. I'll keep you posted!

Summer Hours

We will be closed:
  • June 25, 26, 27 for the downtown carnival
  • July 4 & 5 for Independence Day
  • September 6 & 7 for Labor Day
Otherwise, we will remain open seven days through the summer.

Happy Fibering!
