Greetings!

Hard to believe that summer is finally "almost" here! That means we will discontinue Wednesday evening Drop In Knitting until September. Of course, that also means Concerts in the Park start soon, too. Most Wednesday evenings you'll be able to find Anneliese, Desi and I knitting and spinning away to some great local music. You are invited to grab your chair and join us. The park is just a block south of the shop, we'll let you know when the concert schedule is posted to the Downtown Lake Orion website.
Spotlight on SoySilkŪ
SoySilk is a trademark of South West Trading Company, a woman-owned company that specializes in cutting edge fibers. A spinner at heart and innovator extra-ordinaire, Jonelle Raffino introduced SoySilk to the spinning and knitting worlds in 2001 and hasn't stopped to look back. She was also among the first to go to market with Bamboo yarns and yarn made from crustacean shells (chitin) and minerals (Jadeite).

The following is extracted from an SWTC flier about SoySilk: SoySilk is made from the residue of soybeans from tofu manufacturing. The process is 100% natural and free of any petrochemicals, making it an extremely environmentally friendly product. Soy protien is a completely renewable resource. Textile engineers began working with soy as a source for renewable fibers in the first half of the last century. Henry Ford even had a suit made of soy "wool" and was an innovator in everything soybean for many years.

SoySilk is a rayon yarn that contains natural anti-bacterial agents, has the softness and smoothness of cashmere, has excellent wearability and the same moisture absorption as cotton, but it dries faster making it more comfortable and sanitary.

We stock Phoenix worsted weight knitting SoySilk, Soysilk spinning fiber and two different weights/textures of weaving-weight yarns: in 8/2 and 10/2 weights. The 10/2 comes in small cones in a rainbow of hues. The 8/2 yarn is natural colored and an excellent choice for weaving into towels. SoySilk can be dyed using standard acid dyes as it is a protien based fiber.

Here's what you've been up to lately:

Alien

Gayle just finished the Alien Illusion Scarf from Stitch N Bitch. This is a fabulous scarf for the young men in your life. Knit with a technique called shadow knitting, the aliens totally disappear when viewed straight on.

Gayle had a productive week! This is a ferret she knit from the book Pet Projects. Isn't Frederico a hoot?

Class spotlight:
Learn to Knit Toe Up Socks
Meets for three Fridays, 6/12, 6/19 and 6/26 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
Have you always wanted to learn to knit socks? It really is one of those things that looks harder than it is. "Learn to Knit Toe-Up Socks" is a good first sock class that will also show you how to knit your socks from the toe up; starting with a simple round toe and using a simple, short-row heel, the knitting is easier to learn and faster to knit than the more traditional versions. The benefit to Toe-Up socks is that you can try them on as you go and the fit is alterable before you get too far and have to rip out hours of knitting (as in cuff down). The class uses Deb's "Any Size, Any Gauge Sock" pattern and can be used with any yarn (great for hand spinners!) to fit any size foot. Pattern included.

Sock knitting tips from Deb H, our resident expert!

Ensure your socks are knitted in a nice, tight, firm fabric or gauge so they will wear well by knitting your socks on two different sized circular needles. Place the sole side of the sock on a size US "0" needle and put the instep side of your sock on a size US "1" needle.
Want to finish your socks faster? Knit the leg of the sock on size US "2" needles. Most of the wear is on the sole and you can have that knit nice and tight without having to knit the whole pair on those little zeros! Caution, if you have a ribbed cuff at the top of the leg to keep your socks up, you might want to knit that much on the US "1" needles.

Last chance!

There are still spaces in the doll class that takes place this Sunday and next. This is going to be a really fun time, with, I suspect, lots of belly laughs. Leave the stress of the real world behind for a few hours, grab your scrap yarn and come play with us! Details on the website.
A reminder about our charity spinning project

We are having a plying party for the charity shawls, this Sunday afternoon, May 31 starting at 1:00. If you are a spinner and you want to help out, please bring your wheel and join in the fun.
