Greetings!

Gina & SallyEveryone knows someone who has lost a job, been "downsized," or been affected in some way by the economic times we are in. At Heritage, we are no exception. First Christel moved to Indiana, then Laura to Ada (MI) and now Gina to San Diego. Gina has worked Wednesdays for several years with Shar and been around since before we started Wednesday morning Sit & Knit. Yesterday was her last day at work, though she won't actually be heading west until sometime over the summer. This is a photo of Gina (left) wearing the poncho that Wednesday regular Sally knit for her as a going away present. For the record, it is the Easy Lace Poncho by Knitting Pure & Simple made of Elsebeth Lavold Bambool. Good luck, Gina! We'll miss you.
Spotlight on Brown Sheep Company
Brown SheepNews from middle America is good. I just got a letter from Brown Sheep that says that they are putting into operation a new waste water system that allows them to recapture 90% of the water used each day as well as the energy used to heat the water. That is a huge savings, especially in a part of our country where water is so precious. The letter also rolled out the new colors for 2010. Check their website for details and watch the store shelves as we'll be bringing in the new colors over the next few months. One last Brown Sheep fun fact: Marge, our Tuesday Drop In Knitting instructor, was in this week and said that her sister named one of the colors (Autumn Run) in the Lanaloft line - how fun!

Brown Sheep lines we carry are: Lamb's Pride worsted and bulky, Nature Spun worsted, Burly Spun, Wildfoot Sock yarn and Lamb's Pride Superwash. Made in America with respect for the environment - a great combination!

Young Spinner
HayleyA while back I got a call from a mom about renting a wheel so that her daughter could learn to spin and do a demo for a class project. I was able to accomodate them with this, my first wheel. Here's Hayley doing her presentation at the Oak Arbor school in Rochester. While she dressed in garb of days gone by (befitting the unit they were studying), Hayley was captured in the here and now by spinning. I hope she sticks with it - it was fun to see how excited she was by it. I love to have a hand in starting new spinners, but it is especially sweet to start young new spinners.

Here's what you've been up to lately:

Zena

Tuesday evening Sit & Knit regular Zena popped in to show off this cheerful Wallaby knit from Lamb's Pride Superwash. The more of these that I see, the more I think I should make one for myself!

Deb's fabricDeb's Fabric Close Up

A few year's back Deb cut back to working only one day a week at Heritage so that she'd have more time to work on her art. Well, not to give her a hard time or anything, but this is the first weaving that we've seen. Guess good things just take time! This is her own hand painted warp. When the "toga" grows up, it will become a vest and we'll get to see it again!

Diane

Diane proudly shows off her latest creation. It is a pattern from the Knitting Daily website knit in Shepherd's Wool. It looks sooooo cozy!

Class spotlight:
Jai JaiDolls, Design & Doodling
Sundays, 5/31 and 6/7, 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, 2 sessions, 8 hours. (a second class is scheduled for fall)
This class is designed for knitters that possess rudimentary knitting skills. If you've knit in the round on double pointed needles and can increase and decrease, you are ready for this class! We will doodle and design with yarn in a small size using a commercial pattern as a launch point. The concepts that you will practice apply equally to full-sized garments. The beauty of making a doll is that you know so much more quickly if your idea needs improvement and the gratification comes more quickly! This is an invitation to come play with us. I guarantee that you'll leave with a doll that makes you smile. My next doll is going to be a "portrait" of my grandson Luke. What will yours be?

A tip from the textile conservator at The Henry Ford

Last weekend Becca and I were invited by Chris and Richard Jeryan, volunteer weavers at Greenfield Village, to attend the annual meeting of the Colonial Coverlet Guild of America. One of the highlights was a behind the scene tour of the textile conservator's lab and viewing of some of the coverlets from their collection. In addition to seeing some stunning examples of early American weaving, Fran told us that you should never store textiles so that they are in contact with raw/exposed wood. So, if you are storing yarn (or any textiles) in a cedar chest or closet (like I've been!), for example, you should put the stored items into a pillow case or wrap them in a sheet. The acids in the wood will stain fibers over time.

A reminder about our charity spinning project

We will be have a plying party, Sunday afternoon, May 31 starting at 1:00. If you are a spinner and you want to help out, please bring your wheel and join in the fun. If you spun the roving and can't make it for the plying party, please make sure it arrives here in time so we can take it to the next step. Special thanks for all those who helped out - especially the Californian crew. Thanks to Sybil for recruiting extra help and Linda for organizing her guild to assist.

Holiday Hours

We will be closed:
May 24 & 25 for Memorial Day
June 25, 26, 27 for Downtown Carnival
July 4 & 5 for Independence Day
September 6 & 7 for Labor Day
Otherwise, we will remain open seven days through the summer.

Happy Fibering!
