April 17, 2009

Greetings!

One of the things I've always wished I could do is pick up the phone and call you and let you know if something cool came in or happened in the store. Now, with technology, that is possible. I recently purchased an iPhone (how'd I ever live without it??) and opened a Twitter account. I opened the Twitter account because of an interview on NPR that piqued my curiosity and it has just been sitting there for a couple weeks waiting for me to figure out how to use it best. Then I had an aha! What if I used it to tell you about little things happening in the Heritage Fiber World? For example, yesterday we put a huge bit of Regia sock yarn into the sale bin. Wouldn't you have liked to know? Next time I will send a Tweet. The iPhone makes it easy - I don't even have to go to the computer. You can find us on Twitter under the screen name HeritageLady. Sign up and see what new things you learn - not just about sales and such, but also classes, tips and other fiber ideas.

BTW - The Sale Starts Today!
We're doing some serious SPRING CLEANING! April 30 is our year-end and that means inventory counting - and no one likes to count, so we'd rather clean house. Come check out the sale bin! Discontinued yarns and colors, books with tiny boo-boos, and probably a few more things. Check out the usual sale bin AND the table/s. Use the coupon below to sweeten the deal!

 New Arrivals
Have you been checking the "New" display in the sock room? Every time we get new items in the store, we put them (a representative sampling) on display there so you can see at a glance what is new. Here's what's on the New Display this week:

Algarve

Algarve Color

We've switched lines of sport weight cotton. I liked the colors and the texture of this new yarn better. It is 100% cotton and comes in both solids and variegated colors. I brought in every single color so you can let your imagination run wild. See all the colors of Algarve ($5.90/ball) and Algarve Color ($7.00/ball) click here. It has 155 yards per 50 gram ball and knits up on US 3-5 needles, yielding 5.75-6.5 stitches per inch.

Opal CottonOpal Wool

We just received new sock samples and the associated yarn for two Opal lines, one in (L) cotton (Cotton 2009) and the other (R) wool (Fireland). To view all the colors that are available click here

Fancy bags

If you are a collector of knitting bags (seems this is a common affliction amongst knitters), you'll certainly want to touch and see the bags that have just arrived. I have to tell you, these were FUN to order. Diana, our yarn rep, showed me the bag and lining fabric swatches and I got to mix and match and "create" bags just for us. They are beautiful and very well made (in America, I might add). This is the large version. There is also an open-topped project bag that is smaller. Even our youngest staff members are in love with these. Great idea for a Mother's Day gift!

Sheep Kits

And, for fun: Sheep Kits for knitters - just add needles! With several to choose from, you can can't go wrong. Here are a few of the ideas I came up with for finding an excuse to knit them: decorate your knitting area, embellish a gift, hang on a tree, guild holiday gift exchange, unique gift for a teacher at Christmas, add some lavendar and turn it into a sachet, add it to that backet of yarn sitting on your coffee table just because you like to look at it. With several different versions to choose from, you won't be bored and you just might learn a new knitting technique!

Coming in the fall . . .
Yes, the first yarn rep showing fall yarns came in this week. Here are previews of two of the new yarns that will be coming in September:

New Yarns for Fall

On the left is Twice Tweed from Elsebeth Lavold. This yarn is made from 100% recycled wool, poly, and cotton. It has a wonderful feel to it - fine for next to the skin wear - and it is a perfect substitute for her Silky Wool so there are oodles of patterns to choose from. This yarn will allow you to look good, feel good and DO good. The second yarn is called Super Aussie. It is a 100% Merino Superwash that is spun tightly enough that pilling will be minimized and softly enough so that it doesn't feel hard. Also perfect for next to the skin wear and terrific for gifting as the recipient can wash in the machine without hurting it. Both yarns will retail for under $7.00 per skein. Great yarns, great value.
Friends of Heritage Gallery
Marge has already been busy. The minute the sheep ornament kits came i,n she snapped one up and knit this cutie. Gets you in the mood for summer and fireworks, doesn't it?

Classes
Our class scheduling guru, Jamisen, has been busy working on revamping the functionality of the classes portion of our website. You can now click on the class calendar and see not only classes that are starting, but also classes that are ongoing. Plus, at the top of each section, you have sorting options. Take a peak and let us know what you think - we'd like your feedback.

Class spotlight: Flax to Linen. This spinning class provides exposure to seven different fiber kinds/preparations including bleached and unbleached flax, hemp, raimie and flax strick. You'll learn about the flax growing process and even get a few strands of flax still in the straw to break, hackle and spin. Taking a class like this is the perfect way to try a new fiber and see if you like it. You'll leave with nearly a pound of fibers to continue your experimenting at home.

The Doll Class

JacqueLast week I promised to show you the doll that inspired the class I've added to the schedule. Her name is Jai-Jai Boucle (Jai-Jai for Jacque Junior - Boucle for her hair!)! She is such a hit that I've scheduled the class twice - once in May and again in the fall. This is going to be too, too fun. Come play with us in a multi-media fiber playground. While the doll is knit, you may want to incorporate weaving, crochet, beading or any other fiber art into your finished work of art. I did a lengthy blog posting about my doll making and Jai Jai. While you are at the blog, take the time to read the previous story posted yesterday - Joy tells about her yarn adventures down under.

Happy Fibering!
