Greetings!

Time now to mark your calendars for a few of this year's fiber events:

Castle Farms Fiber Arts Festival in Charlevoix, the last weekend in July. (We'll have a booth. They do not have classes.)
Michigan League of Handweavers biannual conference in Holland, August 5 - 7. Unfortunately, I'll be out of the country at a weaving workshop and won't be attending this year - but they've got some great offerings. You can even attend and learn to weave!
Michigan Fiber Fest in Alleghan, the third weekend in August. (We'll have a booth. I'm teaching several classes)
Northern Michigan Lamb and Wool in West Branch, the last weekend in September. (I'm teaching rigid heddle)

PLUS! A week of savings. Don't miss the great coupon below.

CupcakeDig into your stash to make a party full of these low-cal cupcakes! This particular one was knit by Gayle and given to me for my birthday. It makes a fun gift for a knitter. Christel, with the help of her Heritage knitting buddies, make a couple dozen of them for her daughter's baby shower. The pattern is in a book called One Skein.

Another favorite is the Fiber Trends Landscape Shawl. This is a great pattern for just about any weight of yarn as it is knit from the bottom tip up. All you need to do is Landscape Shawlselect the size of needle that gives you the fabric you like from your scrumptious yarn and stop knitting when it is the size you like. This version is knit from our 100% silk handpainted yarn. It makes you feel special to wear it because it drapes so beautifully. Feel free to try it on when you are in next time - you'll see why it is a favorite.

Prolific. In a word prolific. That's how Michelle knits. This week she is modeling the "Tangerine Smoothie" sweater she knit from the book Quick Knits, Cool Projects. It is made from a really versatile yarn from Brown Sheep called Cotton Fleece, made from a blend of 80% cotton and 20% wool.

Classes
Our class scheduling guru, Jamisen, has been busy working on revamping the functionality of the classes portion of our website. You can now click on the class calendar and see not only classes that are starting, but also classes that are ongoing. Plus, at the top of each section, you have sorting options. Take a peak and let us know what you think - we'd like your feedback.

Class spotlight:
Understanding Yarn & Fibers.  This class is one of those classes that everyone who works with yarn should take. You will learn all kinds of things that will help you make better choices for projects. PLUS, you'll get to have hands-on knitting (or small loom) experience with at least 10 different current yarns. This isn't a yarn tasting - it is better. You won't get a sales pitch, you'll be educated. See first-hand how linen, cotton, wool, silk, and man-made fibers feel and work and differ. This is one class for which you'll be glad you made time.

One thing leads to another . . .

I spent last evening with my daughter and a friend at Oakland County SkyWarn training put on by the National Weather Service. We learned about tornadoes and how to report bad weather and precipitation. It was interesting. They told us that this week is Weather Emergency Preparedness week and referred us to a website called www.ready.gov. I went to the website and it, in turn, reminded me of my days in the Army Reserve. In the mid-90s I was responsible for my unit's emergency readiness. A unique job in the military that got absolutely no respect prior to 9/11. No matter, I attacked the job with gusto and learned a lot. That got me thinking . . . what have I done for my business? So, we'll be working on that over the next few months at company meetings. Learning better how to deal with emergencies and learning CPR. Does your family and business have a plan? Just some food for thought.

Happy Fibering!
