March 3, 2009

Greetings!

Everyone is getting weary of winter. At this point, it is beyond cabin fever! I know that spring is right around the corner (less than three weeks now) because I saw a hyacinth starting to peek out of the garden soil and because we've had more than one request for yarn for summery projects. That's one thing I love about Michigan - just when you are tired of one season, another comes along.

Here's a photo from a friend I went to high school with. These are his wife's chickens . . . out on the farm! This is what grass and tulips looks like! Remember?

Girls Night and Saturday Spinning Group
Just a reminder that tonight is Girls Night (7 to 10, first Friday) and the spinning group will meet tomorrow, first Saturday morning (10 to noon or so). All are invited. There is no charge to attend either event.
Real Deal for Spinners

Schacht Spindle Company is celebrating its 40th year in business this year and is hosting an "I made it on my Schacht Contest." In conjunction with that, I promised you that we'd have some FREE classes to help you get ready for the contest. Our first will be on Saturday, April 4 from 1 to 3 in the afternoon. Annie will lead a "Spinning Tune Up" class. This will be totally hands-on. She'll be watching your hands and your wheel and giving you pointers for improving your skills. While having a Schacht wheel isn't mandatory (you can try ours), we do ask that you bring yours if you have one. Here's a link to the form for the contest so you can read more about it.

Watch this space for announcements of FREE weaving classes to support this contest.
 New yarn

The yarn rep was in a couple weeks ago and convinced me to give Kraemer yarns a try. They are spun in Nazareth, Pennsylvania so they are fairly close to home. We got in Tamany Tweed (not pictured) in a few colors. First to come in were pink and blue. This is a worsted weight cotton/acrylic blend that I thought would be perfect for the Lillie sweater or Wallaby. Very machine washable, great for kids in warmer climates, too. The other Kraemer yarn, shown below, is called Saucon Sock. I ordered it in 5 different "manly" tweedy colors. It is a non-wool sock yarn comprised of 44% cotton, 43% acrylic and 13% nylon. One skein contains 430 yards and costs $13.50.

You may have been reading about the buzz surrounding Mariane Isager and her yarns and patterns. We just received two of her books, available in English for the first time. Along with the books came some very, very lovely and tempting linen.

This week we saw quite a few finished projects. Here's a sampling:

That's Sally, on the left, wearing a sweater out of Lamb's Pride Bulky from the Best of Lopi book. Donna is wearing her Modern Quilt Wrap shawl knit using Kid Silk Haze.

Kathy, on the left, models her Bohus sweater from a pattern in Poems of Color. The yarn is Jamieson Spindrift. Barb models a sweater that is based on a child-sized sweater she liked. It is made from Jamieson Chunky Marl.

Kathy Hagen (pictured above in the Bohus sweater) wrote a letter to the editor that was published in the current issue of Piecework. Included is a photo of her Lily of the Valley shawl made from our yarn.

Meg Knauf also wrote to share with us that "a project I knit, using yarn I purchased from Heritage, will be shown on an upcoming episode (2009) of Knitting Daily TV in their "You Made It!" segment. They saw this little purse at Ravelry and requested to use it for the filming of the episode.  The pattern is Amanda's Squatty Sidekick which is available as a free download from Knitting Daily.  The segment will feature several variations on the pattern and mine is one of them!  I used Cascade 220 Tweed in Olive."

It is always fun to have your work honored like this. Congratulations for Kathy and Meg!
Happy Fibering!
