Greetings!

Now that Knit Michigan is behind us, life in the shop is settling down to normal. Thank goodness! Just wanted to remind you that Girls Night is coming up (guys are welcome, too). Haven't had one since January, so it's worth mentioning. It is always the first Friday of the month (except February and July) from 7 to 10. Come and bring your knitting or spinning and enjoy a pleasant evening with other fiber folks. Put it on your calendar for 3/6 and we hope to see you here!

New Addition to the Shop
Our sitting room has a new work of art. This was quilted by Judy Borel of Ann Arbor and was donated to Knit Michigan as an auction item. One of the committee members, Nancie, won the bid on it (after I dropped out!). When Nancie got it home, she decided that it needed to be at the shop, so it is resting here for a while - many thanks to Nancie and to Judy. It's touches like this that make me slip sometimes and call the shop "home"!!

Contest for Spinners & Weavers

Schacht Spindle Company is celebrating it's 40th year in business this year and is hosting an "I made it on my Schacht Contest." Prizes include a special edition cherry Wolf Pup, special edition Matchless spinning wheel and more. They also have a YouTube challenge for the most entertaining video. Prizes will be awarded for best expert, best novice, most fun, most clever, plus: best Schacht equipment story accompanying your entry. And, the shop that has the most customers submitting entries will win a party - for all those of you that submit entries. It costs nothing to enter and you never know - you just might win! Here's a link to the form. Remember, if you own a Flip - a rigid heddle is weaving, too, don't be intimidated!

New and not-so-new yarn

New colors of Opal Hunderwasser came in this week. This time in large enough quantities to make garments from the book I told you about a few weeks ago (shown on their website). Both the book and the yarn are on the "new" shelves - come take a peek!

And, a not-so-new yarn, Country Classic Sock yarn. This is a wool/nylon blend in boot sock weight. The kind of socks you make from these are what you want to wear  when you are sitting out in the deer blind or doing other sedentary things outside. Most people won't want this wool next to their skin, but it is perfect for layering. The tweedy colors are great for men or women and the added nylon increases durability. This yarn would also work well for mittens that will be used for hard work: shoveling snow, mucking out the stalls, gathering maple syrup.

Friends of Heritage Gallery
Jill Bastian rediscovered knitting a couple years ago after being an avid knitter during her college years. She knits many of the gifts she and her husband Doug give. Jill makes me smile. Now that they are retired, she has a yarn budget and he a train budget. Together they have a gift budget. Guess who gets to tap two budgets for her knitting? You guessed it: Jill! This gift sweater is being modeled by Desi, who works in the shop on Sundays. It is made from Brown Sheep's Naturespun, a worsted weight wool. The pattern is the Wallaby Sweater from Cottage Creations, thus named for the sweatshirt-like pouch. This is the first adult Wallaby I've seen in a while, the pattern is most often used for kids.

Next is a pair of socks knit by Neena. She one of our teen knitters and a really sharp kid. Neena started knitting in the last couple of years and is now taking Knitting Boot Camp and Focus on Fit. A family friend and one of our past Art Show winners, Sally, helped her learn the skills to make the Peerie Socks. The pattern and yarn are available as a kit and are one of our original designs.

Finally, here's a pair of socks knit of Heirloom Puzzle yarn by Karen. Karen and I started emailing back and forth after last week's newsletter because she wrote to say that she knew two of the people with projects in the newsletter in the past two issues - and she didn't know them because of Heritage. Small world. Karen also wrote, "I use the newsletter as a brief break from the insanity at work.  It's an excuse to stop thinking about the hustle and bustle for a minute or two." Next best thing to knitting! That's Pumpkin sharing the spotlight.

Classes
Class spotlight: Chippy Socks for Kids
Lynn H of www.colorjoy.com is coming over from Lansing to teach this sweet little class. Lynn is a color freak (I know she'd agree with that statement). These socks are the perfect marriage of color and function. Knit in children's sizes in DK weight yarn, they are knit not as traditional pairs, but rather as go-togethers. Knit a group (3, 4, 5) for a perfect shower or toddler birthday gift. The best part: you never knit the same sock twice so there is no second sock syndrome to slow you down. Each sock is new and fresh and fun! If you have not knit with two colors at one time, this class is a great introduction to that technique. Come and play in the "color playground" with Lynn. I know you'll have a great time. Sunday the 7th from 10 to 4 with a lunch break.

Don't forget!
We'll have two other visiting instructors in March, Arnhild for knitting and Robyn for weaving. Make sure to get your yarn order in for Arnhild's class by 3/2. For Robyn's class you must come with a warped loom. We do have some looms available for loan if you don't have a portable loom.

You are so generous!
Thanks to all who volunteered to deliver chemo caps to hospitals around the state. I had enough calls and emails to deliver them twice over!

Think about it.
Heritage Sheep LogoThis card is framed and hangs out in the sitting room of the shop. It reminds me that positive thinking (and doing your legwork) really do make all the difference in the world. How can this short quote from Henry Ford inspire you?

Happy Fibering!
