Greetings!

People from out-state and with standing commitments have asked how they can help with Knit Michigan. Others of you just want to help throughout the years. Here's a list of how you can contribute to the cause - where do you fit in?
  • Design a square for the Knit Michigan original design afghan, yarn provided by Louet. Email me for details. Due by May 1.
  • Proof knit a designer's square - knit between May and August. Yarn provided by Skacel.
  • Knit a chemo cap, crochet around a blanket or knit a teddy bear. Check out the comfort item page on the Knit Michigan website.
  • Deliver a bag of chemo caps. I have five more bags of caps in my office that need delivered to: Gaylord, Grand Rapids, Karmanos/Detroit, Genesys/Grand Blanc, and Traverse City.
More new arrivals to the sock room

This week's "what's new" is in the form of colors for two of our popular Elsebeth Lavold lines: Silky Wool and Hempathy.

Hempathy

All the colors are very clear. My personal favorites are the white white Silky Wool and the platinum Hempathy. Very yummy.

Jessica is a long-distance member of the Heritage family. She has lived in Germany for work for two years, before that she lived in the area and is looking forward to returning. She knit this Dragon-Skin Wrap from Interweave Knits Holiday 2007, ostensibly for her mom, but she brought it in to model for us. It is made using Shepherd's Wool. Good job Jess!

Classes
Class spotlight
Come play in my yarn playground! Next Saturday I'm teaching a class called Understanding Yarn. We'll talk about different fibers, twist, yarn construction and, most importantly, what makes one kind of yarn better for a project than another. You'll get to knit a bit with some of the yarns and evaluate the fabric you create. My goal is to have you understand how to substitute yarns with confidence - after all, yarns are discontinued all the time and the yarn for that perfect sweater pattern may not be available any longer.

Don't forget!
We'll have two visiting instructors in March, Arnhild for knitting and Robyn for weaving. Make sure to get your yarn order in for Arnhild's class by 3/2. For Robyn's class you must come with a warped loom. We do have some looms available for loan if you don't have a portable loom.

Thank you
I am really gratified by the number of people who have come in lately and told me that they shop at Heritage because they want us to be here. Many of them go on to say that while they look on the Internet, they know it is no cheaper to shop locally and they are helping to preserve a resource. Comments like these tickle me down to my toes.

I've been trying to do my bit for the locals - all within walking distance of the shop. M&B Graphics made banners almost overnight for Knit Michigan. The new jewelers repaired my broken necklace and are making an earring for me. Tesori is tempting me with a sale coming up next week on Troll beads (a favorite of mine). Little Monsters provides fun little gifts for staff members (a sheep duck, just too cute!). Elements always has great gifts and the new stationery store looks intriguing. I met Tonya, the owner, at a meeting last week but haven't had a chance to stop in yet. They're on my list. Not only is it helpful to our community and Michigan to shop close to home, it is so much more fun to do business with people who have ownership in the business. When's the last time you had a warm fuzzy feeling in a big box store? It happens downtown all the time! Come on down and make a day of it.

Happy Fibering!
