Greetings!

It has been a busy week getting ready for Knit Michigan. My office is a disaster area - but full of offers from very, very generous people. Almost daily Nancie has been coming to load her car with contributions for the silent auction. Debbie and Suzanne have taken several loads of food and paper products. All donated. I forgive the messy office . . . but will be glad to get back to normal around here! More on Knit Michigan later.

I got carried away writing for this week's newsletter so one piece - a book review of Maggie Casey's Start Spinning has been moved to our blog. If you have a minute, take the time to click here and read about this refreshing new spinning book.
New arrivals to the sock room

Zauberball YarnTwo new sock yarns came in this week. Two balls have already been shipped to mom for sample knitting. Can't wait to get them back. These yarns are both wonderful.

Pictured at left is Schoppel Wolle's Zauberball (Zauber means magic in German). It comes in a uniquely wound ball that looks like balls I've seen in the knitting baskets of women raised in Europe. The balls feel substantial and they look gorgeous sitting in the basket and on the shelf. In addition to looking pretty just sitting, they also work well as a sock yarn having a 75% wool/25% nylon Zauberball Sockcontent. Each skein has 460 yards - more than enough for a good sized pair of socks. But wait, there's more! This yarn is soft. Yummily soft. Knit into scarves and sweaters and next to the skin soft. I have visions of a Fair Isle mitten dancing in my head made with this for the pattern color.

Heritage Sheep LogoThe second yarn is Sockina Cotton. It is the perfect sock yarn for summer or those sensitive to wool. It has a lofty feel like wool that comes from a composition of 55% cotton, 25% nylon (for durability) and 20% acrylic (for added loft). This yarn self patterns in a look reminiscent of Fair Isle knitting.

Knit tip
Slipping stitches while knitting is done for several reasons:
  1. To bring color up from the row below (as in mosaic or slip stitch knitting.
  2. At the beginning of a row to enable seaming or picking up stitches.
  3. At the turning point of short rows.
  4. As part of a decrease.
In the first three instances, slip the stitch/es one at a time as if to purl. In the last instance - decreasing - slip as if to knit unless otherwise directed. When you slip as if to knit, you are reorienting the stitches so that they will lay properly in the decrease. When working an SSK, slip each stitch separately. When working a central chain decrease (a type of double decrease), it is critical that you slip the two stitches together as one or you will end up with a left slanting decrease that resembles a "slip one-k2tog-psso".

Remember the slip rule: Slip as if to purl except when you decrease (or are instructed otherwise).
Friends of Heritage Gallery
Heritage Sheep LogoThis week Christel sends us a photo of her grandson Alex. Alex is wearing a Wallaby sweater made from worsted weight wool (we no longer carry this yarn, but Lamb's Pride Superwash or Berocco Comfort would be good substitutes). Alex's hat was a gift from another Heritage knitter, Barbara (mom to Sophia who works here on the weekend). According to Alex, "Babeba knit Alex hat!!!

Heritage Sheep LogoAnd, this is Stacey modeling a shawl knit by Michelle. Michelle shopped the sale bin for some ladder yarn and married it to some of our coned 3/2 mercerized cotton. Let me tell you, the fabric feels great. It has a wonderful hand. She also said that knitting the two together took the "awful" out of knitting the ladder yarn. Michelle used the Prairie Shawl pattern from the Folk Shawls book.

Heritage Sheep LogoFinally, this is Artie modeling the cover shawl from Victorian Lace Today. It is knit in a lace weight alpaca that we dyed in the Trout colorway. Artie did a beautiful job knitting and blocking this. It is certainly a testament to her love for lace.
