Greetings!

First off, because of Knit Michigan next Saturday, there will be no Girls' Nite on Friday nor Spinning Group on Saturday. Both events will be back in March.

There's still time to be a day-long "marathon" participant at Knit Michigan. BUT your registration form must be in our store by the close of business on Friday, January 30. After that, you must participate as a day-time visitor (and still enjoy the Market, silent auction, Learn-To activities, Ravelry Meet-Up and more).

New Arrival from Louet: Eastport Alpaca

Eastport AlpacaWith color names like sunrise red, quoddy bay gray, lupine lavender and sea glass green, you know Eastport is a "home grown" yarn. Made from 70% US alpaca and 30% merino, this yarn is a must try. I bought just enough of this scrumptious yarn for us to give it a try in hats, mittens or scarves. Something tells me we'll be wanting to order it in sweater quantities very soon! Eastport's colors are the soft colors of nature: think of how the colors are muted on a foggy day and you've got the feeling. Careful - one touch of this stuff is addictive (there is a reason it is one of the few new yarns I ordered in San Diego!).
Don't miss this great opportunity!
Robyn Spady's classes are just six weeks away. Having her in our very own backyard is a real treat. Robyn is a regular instructor on the national scene: Convergence, Complex Weavers and even the Michigan Weaver's Conference (being held in early August this year).

Small/simple loom weaving is HOT! Why? It doesn't cost much to get one of these looms and it doesn't take much practice before you are turning out fabulous pieces. NO PREVIOUS weaving experience is required to take Robyn's Inkle Loom class. I first saw Robyn's work at an Ashford workshop where she showed us samples of her inkle work. I was amazed and I think you will be, too.

Robyn's 3-day workshop is called Pictures, Piles, Potpourri & Perplexing Curiosities. This round-robin style workshop will give you an opportunity to try weave styles that you may never get to try in any other setting. You will make velvet, corduroy, and Beiderwand. You'll try bead leno and other not-so-common techniques.

I've decided that I am going to have to take these workshops, too. Join me, won't you?

Kathy's GlovesThis week we have a photo of Kathy and her new gloves. She made them from Regia sock yarn in one of the Kafe Fassett colorways. Aren't they just too fun?! This pattern is from a book that my mom used when we were kids. Here's a link to it: http://freevintageknitting.com/patternbook/mittensbk29.html. Mom made us the blue mittens on the cover (only ours were red). She made them from REAL wool - a special treat in our household where most of her yarns were Red Heart.

Heritage Sheep LogoAnd, this is John. You may remember him from our blog as the little one asleep in his dad's lap. Well, Dad Paul finished the Baby Albert (The Knitting Experience: The Knit Stitch by Sally Melville) and John is very proud of it. It is knit in Heirloom Easy Care 8, one of my favorite yarns.

As always, click on the images to see a larger view of the photos.
Classes

POSTPONED! Knitting Boot Camp has been postponed and will now start in February. Registration was slow, so we thought we'd give the class a little more time to build - it is so much more fun with more students! It will now start on Tuesday evening, February 17.

Heritage Sheep LogoNorwegian knitting with Arnhild is coming in March. Learn how to knit with three colors in one row (similar but not the same as Fair Isle knitting) in her hat class that will be held on Friday evening, March 20.

Heritage Sheep LogoOn Saturday and Sunday, March 21 & 22, learn the secrets of knitting sweaters the Norwegian way. Arnhild has provided a selection of sweaters - register for the class and order your kit at the same time. She'll get you started and maybe even come back to help us finish them.

These classes are a great opportunity to learn authentic Norwegian knitting. Until 20 years ago, Arnhild lived north of the Arctic circle in Norway. With knitting becoming so amalgamated via the Internet, there won't be many PURE traditional knitters left in the world soon. Take advantage of this opportunity while you can.

Heritage Sheep LogoLast Friday evening we had the absolute best time at our Smart Sheep Party & Sale for Heritage Club members. John Rios, www.grafixjam.com, a caricaturist, illustrator, all around nice guy and weaving supporter entertained us with his art. The sales were, well, really good. The food was yummy. But, the people were the best of all. I'd like to share an email with you that Jacque sent me following the party:

Hello Joan and the Heritage Family,
I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the party you held for Heritage Club Members.  I had a joyous time and John Rios' caricatures were a hit!  The sales were fab-u-lous.  I figured that after the sale price I saved 1.5 times the cost of the membership on my purchases.  So, for those who think it is not worth the purchase, remember we are only in the first month of the year and it has paid for itself 1.5xs over!
Keep up the good work and see you at Knit Michigan!

Ed CaricatureJoin the Heritage Club and next year you will be invited to this always-in-January-party, too (and perhaps you can have your caricature done like Ed did)! Not to mention all the other benefits you experience throughout the year.

Happy Fibering,

Joan Sheridan
