| Greetings!
Last week I was fortunate enough to be able to escape the cold and travel to sunny and warm San Diego for the winter yarn show. It always amuses me that the winter show is for summer yarn and the summer show is for winter yarn. I only had time to shop a little as my primary reason for going was to teach. Read all about my adventures on my blog (link at left).
Knit Michigan
Saturday, February 7
Open to the public from 10 to 3.
Learn to knit, spin, crochet, make felt. Help make comfort items for cancer patients. Turn in your hand-made caps for distribution to cancer centers around the state. Shop at 16 LYSs. Play silly games and win a prize.
There are still marathoner spaces available but classes are filling.
Help Knit Michigan now . . . we are looking for donations of the following items:
- Cases of soda
- Bottles of water (single serving size)
- Snacks (candy bars, pretzels, etc.) (single serving size) [Through your generosity, we already have enough M&Ms and potato chips]
- Styrofoam Coffee Cups (with lids would be a bonus!)
- Hot chocolate mix packets
- Sugar & Creamer
- Luncheon and dinner size plates (for 125)
- Plastic ware (for 125)
Please drop off at Heritage before Feb 4. Your support is appreciated and helps ensure that every penny we collect goes directly to the selected cancer charities.
Also:
- Clean your fiber room and enhance our silent auction: donate projects that you know you'll never get around to doing. Bring to the shop by the end of the month.
- Make a chemo cap or other comfort item (patterns on the website). Bring these items to Knit Michigan. If you cannot attend, please drop them off the store before February 7.

| Simply Shetland Trunk Show |
|
Last week I showed you two items from the Simply Shetland trunk show. I neglected to say that the samples are from the book Simply Shetland 5 (which we now out of stock on, but it has been reordered). Here's the third piece that is on display. A lovely scarf knit in entrelac embellished with tassels.

| Gauge |
|
You may have noticed the original Coloring Book Shawl that has been on display in the store for several years. Recently we had it reknit in two different gauges. This group photo (click on it to enlarge) illustrates what a difference yarn and needle size make. From left to right the yarns and needle sizes are: Jaggerspun SuperLamb on size 0 needles; Jaggerspun Zephyr on size 3; and Bloomfield on size 5. All three shawls are on display in the store. Also, kits in the colors shown are available for the two larger sizes, the smaller size will be available soon.

Show and Tell at the shop is always fun. A customer will come in and show us their latest project and everybody gathers around - everybody in the store. I've been collecting photos for a long time that I intended to put on the website, but that isn't happening very fast, so I thought I'd start sharing them here with you each week.
This is Trish Bloom modeling her Mariko scarf. She test knit the graph for me - the words are still being proofed. It is made from her very own handspun. I hope to have the pattern ready (finally) for Knit Michigan.
And, this is Kyla Crawford. Kyla is an art student at Wayne State. Her tam is made from handspun yarn and the slubby part of her scarf is handspun.

Around town.
Night Notes. One of our customers is an oboeist with the Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings. Sally is performing in their Nightnotes "knitting" concert "Oboe Trio: with Donald Baker, Sally Pituch and Stephanie Shapiro," a taking place on Friday, January 30 at 8:30 pm at Hagopian World of Rugs. They are offering a discount of $5 off per ticket to knitters. Tickets are normally $20 in advance and $25 at the door, so knitters pay $15 in advance and $20 at the door - just let them know you are a knitter. And as always, knitters can feel free to bring their projects with them!
In the Shop
Sometimes you get a gift that really makes you smile. This needlefelted piece was a Christmas present from a very gifted Heritage volunteer, Jenny Depa-Karl. Jenny does our windows and always brings show and tell with her when she comes. She has a lovely little shop on her farm in Armada that is a must-see if you are out and about on a drive in that neck of the woods. You can see her work on line at www.sheepyhollowherbs.com. Meanwhile, we have this little bit of Jenny here in the shop hanging in the Sock Room every day. Sweet, isn't it?
Reminder: Smart Sheep Party and Sale for all Heritage Club members is this Friday from 5 to 10. It's not too late to attend: just sign up to be a Heritage Club member before the party and you'll be included.
Happy Fibering,
Joan Sheridan
