Greetings!

Happy New Year! By now you are all settling in for winter with knitting needles flying, hearth fires blazing and a cup of hot chocolate at your side in the evening. Yum! Check out the blog (link at left) to see what projects I've been working on. Be sure to stop and show us your finished projects, too. We love show & tell. Just yesterday a couple of Suzanne's Thursday night group had newly finished projects that were simply gorgeous! Lisa knit up a jacket from the new Cheryl Oberle book using Jamieson Chunky Marl yarn and Dea was showing off her Shepherd's Wool cape from one of the Simply Shetland books. Beautiful work!

This is the time of year when we remind you about our discount program: The Heritage Club. In addition to the benefits below, if you join this month you will receive an invitation to a special party and sale only for Club members. This year's event will be held on Friday evening, January 23 from 5 until 10 p.m.. Shop, knit, visit, enjoy the (really good) munchies. You MUST present your invitation or card to attend.

Become a member of the Heritage Club and get a whole slew of great benefits:
  • 10% off regularly priced yarn and fiber all the time - you don't even have to ask for the discount or show your card, it will automatically be deducted at time of purchase.
  • 3 free visits to Drop In Knitting.
  • $5 off one class.
  • One hour early admittance to sales (first day of sales only).
  • Also participating are Poppy Seed Coffee & Deli (10% off total bill) and Insel Haus Bed and Breakfast (10% off all rooms during peak season, 20% off during non-peak).
The cost to join the club is just $50. The bottom line is: if you spend just just $150 in yarn, attend one class and three drop in sessions, you've paid for your card. Cards are valid for one year from date of purchase.
Robyn Spady is Coming!
Robyn SpadyRobyn is a really wonderful weaver - adept on the computer, a whiz with the shuttle and entertaining and enlightening as a teacher. Robyn regularly teaches at Convergence, Complex Weavers and guilds around the country. Becca, Su, Joy and I have all taken classes with her and felt we came away with our money's worth. That's why we invited her here! Robyn is a curious weaver. She holds her COE in Handweaving, Levels 1 and 2 from the Handweaver's Guild of America. Her specialized study was "Loom-controlled Stitched Double Cloth." While in Michigan (she's from the Seattle area), she'll be teaching two different classes:

0803 Inkle Weaving in the 21st Century: an introduction to inkle weaving
Dates, 2009:Friday March 13, 2009 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The inkle loom is one of the simplest looms around and its amazing potential is often overlooked and undervalued. This studio class is a combination of presentation and hands-on work. Participants will observe new ways to design and create bands for traditional and non-traditional uses and set up their inkle looms to create bands, trim, and ribbon that may be used
Required equipment: Supply List
Supply Fee: $5.00 payable to instructor
Class fee: $80, includes yarn (ask for info sheet upon registration).
NOTE: We have one loaner inkle loom that will be available for this class on a first-come, first-served basis. Inkle looms are very affordable and we have a couple in stock. Please, if you are intending to take this class and need a loom, shop early to ensure one is available by class time.

3820 Pictures, Piles, Potpourri, and Perplexing Curiosities

This is a workshop designed for intermediate-to-advanced weavers (and adventure-seeking beginners) that want to learn new weave structures. In this round-robin workshop, participants will expand their knowledge and experience in weave structures they may have heard of but, may not have woven. A surefire weaving adventure and challenging journey of warp and weft. Structures covered include multi-block swivel and bead leno, corduroy, velvet, samitum, corkscrew twills, lampas, and Beiderwand.
Required equipment:minimum of 4 shaft loom and weaving tool kit
Supply Fee:$20 per person payable to instructor.
Class fee: $210
Some looms are available for rental at $20 for the weekend. All looms must be warped following the instructions provided (upon registration).
Arnhild is coming, too!
Starlight SweaterJust for Knitters! Set aside the weekend of March 21 & 22 to learn about Norwegian knitting from a transplanted-to-Iowa-Norwegian. Arnhild has been a knitter for just about all of her life, and lived in the US for a bit over 20 years. In Norway she lived a days travel NORTH of the Arctic circle. Read more about her at www.arnhild.com. Arnhild has lots to share when it comes to knitting and she's a very creative knitter. By next week we'll have all the details hammered out but the bare bones look like this:

Friday evening: Try your hand at knitting a Norwegian style hat, learn how to knit with two and three colors at a time and come away with something to keep your head toasty warm.

Sat/Sun: Arnhild will teach all the elements of knitting a Norwegian-style cardigan. You'll cast on for a sweater of your choice based on one of a group of patterns she has preselected for us. You'll learn about cutting your knitting, picking up for bands, knitting with multiple colors and more. This isn't difficult knitting. Just, perhaps, a bit different than what you've been used to.

Watch the newsletter next week for complete details!
Have fun and help others!

 Knit Michigan.com
This year's Knit Michigan event is drawing close:
When?: Saturday, February 7
Where?: Academy of the Sacred Heart, Bloomfield Hills
Why?: To support cancer patients and their families by contributing to five different Michigan cancer organizations and providing patient comfort items (such as chemo caps, blankets and more) to hospitals around the state.
Why else?: Because it is a great way to share our love for fiber (knitting, spinning, weaving, felting, crochet)

Join us for the day as a marathoner and take classes or just come during the day and shop and see the hands-on fiber demos and LOTS more. Don't miss the silent auction, fashion show and Ravelry meet up. Information at www.knitmichigan.com.

Classes

Classes for the New Year . . .

We've got a lot of interesting classes coming up - some project related, others technique focused. An overview:
  • Knitting Boot Camp with Jae - this is a compressed version of the class. You will meet every other week instead of once a month. Start in January and end in May. KBC is a great way to kick start your knitting skills. We've had folks that have been knitting for more than 40 years take the class and learn new things. There is a lot of homework and you must be beyond a beginner knitter to take this class.
  • We have two different focus classes beginning in January: Focus on Shetland Lace and Focus on Fit. The Fit class teaches you to modify patterns to fit YOU. The Lace class covers history, stitches, and shawl design. Both are for intermediate level knitters.
  • Christa Kindt-Newhouse comes at the end of the month for several different classes based on patterns of her own design, including: her very popular Swiss Scarf, a double brioche scarf, cobweb scarf, knitted tassel (think curtain tie-back or bag adornment) and a double weave intensive.
  • The Fish Sweater is back. That class starts this Sunday at 1:00. Based on Jacqueline Fee's Sweater Workshop book, this sampler teaches all the elements of a sweater. Don't feel ready for Knitting Boot Camp? This class is for you!

For those of you who came on New Year's Day, thank you! It really was fun. It is so good to see people just "hanging out," knitting, browsing the books, and making new friends. It is by far my favorite annual event because there is such a relaxed atmosphere.

I've already been busy ordering new yarns for spring. Plus, this week I head out to the winter yarn show in San Diego (a paid teaching assignment) and will have an opportunity to take a peek at more of the new yarns and hopefully spot a few new trends. I'll tell you about that in a couple weeks.

Happy Fibering,

Yarn for the Doctor's Office
This is a reminder to schedule your annual health checkups. While in the waiting room you can be knitting on socks. My mom communicates the length of her wait by how many inches she gets done on her current sock. The most she's gone is 3 inches (she knits more than an inch per hour). Here's hoping your wait is short!

Present this coupon at check out and take 20% off one skein of sock yarn.
* Coupon valid thru 1/16/09. One coupon per person.
