December 19, 2008

Greetings!

Good morning - and a snowy one it is, too! What a perfect day to sit home and play with fiber - or brave the snowstorm and come to the shop and play with us!

Happy Holidays from all of us at Heritage:

 Heritage Staff

This isn't everyone but who is here, back row (L to R): Tress, Jennie, Anneliese, Barbara, Stacey, Ann, Joy, Su, Jamisen, Nancy, Sammie, Laura; front row: Gina, Sharlene, Suzanne, Debbie, Cindy, Sophia, Sophia, Becca. And, almost hidden behind Sophia and in front of Laura, that's Maureen, our honorary staff member.

Some random thoughts:
  • Thanks to all of you who came to support Ryan's one-man art show last Saturday. He had a successful sale.
  • Check out our blog for a story about another young person.
  • Don't forget! You are invited to our annual New Year's Day party. It is during regular shop hours, from 10 to 5 (okay, maybe 5-ish!). I'll make two huge pots of soup, feel free to bring something to share. Come and enjoy the company and get some work done on a project for you! I think it is time for us all to take a break from gift knitting and treat ourselves! No charge to attend. BONUS show us proof that you participated in the Downtown Lake Orion Resolution Run as a runner/walker/volunteer and you will receive 20% off your fiber purchases that day.
  • The next Girls Night is January 2.
  • Don't forget to register for Knit Michigan (www.knitmichigan.com)
  • Last week's coupon had an incorrect expiration date - I got ahead of myself. The coupon expires today - not in 2009!
  • This is the last newsletter of 2008. I'm taking a break next week!
  • Our holiday hours are posted at the end of this newsletter.
Liz's trunk show
Trunk ShowThe show is up and the pieces are wonderful - I am so inspired! Her book is in (and the DVD of the Knitting Daily TV show first series that she co-hosts). If you've wondered about "what to do" with that Rigid Heddle loom sitting in the corner - dust it off, come get some yarn and and Liz's book, pick a project and get warped (because as Syne says on WeaveCast, "You've got to be warped to weave!"). What, don't have a rigid heddle yet? We've got a couple left in stock with more on their way.

****Don't miss "Lunch with Liz", Monday, December 29 from 11 to 1. Send your reservation to staff@heritagespinning.com. Don't wait - spaces are filling fast! Bring your own lunch and enjoy a presentation by Liz about Handwoven magazine and how to make submissions to Interweave publications and lots more. I know you'll enjoy Liz - I've worked on a SWA committee with her for several years and she's dedicated, down-to-earth and a real fiber person (she's bringing photos of her goats, too!). How dedicated? She'll be on vacation in Michigan and agreed to carve time out for us!
Christmas Gift Giving Ideas
I'll keep it short and sweet:
  • Addi Clicks - the new interchangeable needle set
  • Coloring Book Shawl Pattern and Yarn Pack (two versions available)
  • Heritage Club membership (link at left above)
  • Gift Certificate - one size fits all!
Stocking Stuffers
Stocking Stuffers:
  • Knit Light
  • Knit Clips
  • Sock Blocker Key Chain
  • Brittany Crochet Hook
  • Soak or Eucalan wool wash
A New Year's Resolution idea
Resolve to make and maintain a project record book. 3-ring binders work great because you can add pages at will and they are flexible enough that you can include swatches and fiber samples on the pages. Whether you are a knitter, spinner or weaver, it is nice to have a record of where you have been.

Why keep records?
  • To record your growth
  • To look back and smile (especially true when you include a photo taken with the gift recipient)
  • As a source of data for future projects
  • Because it gives you a sense of accomplishment
  • Because it provides a future record for your children, grandchildren and beyond
Classes

Classes at Christmas . . .

Learn to Weave on a Rigid Heddle Loom, 12/27 -  NOTE: this class is full, but if enough people are interested we will schedule a second class on the 26th.

Sock Change PurseSock Change Purse, 12/27 -  Learn how to work a sock from the toe up, make a short row heel, and attach the knitting to the purse frame.

Intermediate Rigid Heddle Weaving, 12/28 Must have had beginning rigid heddle class or some prior rigid heddle weaving experience. (You can sign up to take both RH classes and do just fine - in fact, we recommend it because taking this class will reinforce what you learned in the first class.)

Aspen ShawlAspen Shawl, 12/28 - This pretty shawl is a fusion of Estonian and Russian lace patterns. Spend a relaxed and pleasant day with Joan "playing" with lace.

12/29 - not a class, but not to be missed: Lunch with Liz, author of Weaving Made Easy

Our Next Learn to . . . classes:
Learn to Knit: starts in the new year, Monday, 1/19
Learn to Tat: next session in the new year
Learn to Spin: starts in February (private lessons by appointment)
Learn to Weave on the Rigid Heddle: 12/27
Learn to Weave: starts 1/12 (one week) or 1/30 (weekend) or come to Open Weaving on Monday eveningings.

Details on all of these classes on our website.
