Greetings!
This week we celebrate our 8th anniversary. Imagine that! Eight years old. Hard to to say where the time has gone, but I know I've been busy! I thought you might enjoy seeing this photo taken at our Grand Opening in November 2000. We really only had one room then - as you can see, there wasn't much in it!. This picture was taken where the bookshelves and back wall of coned yarn are now.
My how we've grown! We're celebrating the occasion with our 8th Anniversary Sale, which starts tomorrow and runs through Sunday. We'll have some great deals - and don't miss the coupon below to sweeten the experience (please note, it is only good tomorrow). Watch your in-box for a coupon each day of the sale.
What's on sale? EVERYTHING! Storewide take 10% off - notions, books, yarn, magazines (except Schacht wheels). Look for many, many specials on selected yarns, 30% off all roving (not combed top), 30% off all Kromski wheels and looms as well as 50% off all Cascade products, selected Louisa Harding yarns and the sale bin. |
| Collapse Weave by Anne Field |

|
It is here! I know many of you have been waiting for this book after seeing pre-press copies last fall.
In Collapse Weave: Creating Three-Dimensional Cloth, Anne explores different kinds of collapse weave - using highly energized yarns including wool and elastic. It is interesting to see how she has applied this technique to fabrics as simple as a scarf and as complicated as an award winning garment that was on the runway at Convergence in Grand Rapids a couple of years ago.
This books seamlessly integrates the science and art of collapse weave. Chapters discuss yarn structure, active and passive yarns, weave structures, warping and threading the loom, double weave, texture and even a chapter to spinning yarn for collapse weave. As you read the book, it is clear to see her fascination with creating handwoven fabrics that cannot be created commercially. The photographs illustrate many different examples of collapse weave quite effecitively. They make my fingers itch to throw a warp on the loom and play. If highly textured weaving interests you, you won't want to miss this book.
Stop in to the shop to see one of Anne's scarves in person. We also stock the wool she uses if the projects in this book piques your interest. |

Classes at Thanksgiving . . .
Mini Latvian Mittens - Saturday, 11/29 Noon to 4. A tiny project packed with technique! Learn a bit about the Latvian knitting tradition and make mini mittens suitable for decorating a package, tree, lapel, or even for framing. We'll practice casting on and two different knitted beginnings that you can use on other projects. (The photo shows a penny next to the mittens to give you an idea of the size with which we will be working.)
Tendril Gloves , Friday, 11/28, 10 am to 4 pm. Be the first to knit these wonderfully creative gloves. Knit along with the designer and be introduced to traveling stitches and making fingers. Gloves really are fun to make and not as tedious as you might think. Try your first pair and learn the story behind the pattern as this is one of Jae's original designs - it hasn't even been published yet! Sno Buddies, Saturday, 11/29, 10 am to 4 pm. This class covers some basic techniques and includes a lot of fun. For a very little bit of knitting you learn about shaping and why to choose particular increases and decreases and work in the round. While the pattern calls for these cute snow people to be knit in worsted gauge, more advanced knitters might want to downsize to smaller needles and yarn and make wonderful Christmas tree ornaments. No matter your skill level, you will have fun spending the day with us - away from leftover turkey and football! Another original pattern from a Michigan designer, Knitting at Knoon.

Classes at Christmas . . .
Learn to Weave on a Rigid Heddle Loom, 12/27 - Curious about weaving? The Rigid Heddle is the perfect way to see if you might like this marvelous art form. This class is designed to show you how to prepare your loom for weaving. We'll weave a scarf, discuss color, texture, calculating how much yarn you need and the ins & outs of weaving. You must have your own loom. Sock Change Purse, 12/27 - This very excellent project is much better than making a silk purse out of a sow's ear. It is made with 100% silk hand-painted yarn or patterned sock yarn and is the perfect size to hold your mad-money or your small knitting notions. Learn how to work a sock from the toe up, make a short row heel, and attach the knitting to the purse frame.
Intermediate Rigid Heddle Weaving, 12/28 - Rigid Heddle weaving doesn't have to be plain. We'll play with texture and hand manipulating the threads to create some very cool samples. Start with a warping refresher. We'll work our way through leno, inlay, pick up, hemstitching and other weaving techniques. We'll leave you with ideas for your next exciting rigid heddle project. Must have had beginning rigid heddle class or some prior rigid heddle weaving experience. (You can sign up to take both RH classes and do just fine - in fact, we recommend it because taking this class will reinforce what you learned in the first class.)
Aspen Shawl, 12/28 - This pretty shawl is a fusion of Estonian and Russian lace patterns. The body of the shawl is an unusual combination of garter stitch and stockinette lace. Practice the pattern and work a swatch that incorporates the border. Cast on and get started knitting the full-sized shawl.
12/29 - not a class, but not to be missed: Lunch with Liz, author of Weaving Made Easy
Our Next Learn to . . . classes:
Learn to Knit: starts in the new year, Monday, 1/19
Learn to Tat: next session in the new year
Learn to Spin: starts in February (private lessons by appointment)
Learn to Weave on the Rigid Heddle: 12/27
Learn to Weave: starts 2/5/09

It is time for my annual rant about shopping locally! As tempting as it is to sit in your warm and cozy house and click on the computer, think about getting out and shopping close to home. Now more than ever it makes sense to stimulate our local economy. Shopping in downtown Lake Orion is the best I've seen it since moving here more than 20 years ago. We've got the coolest toy store around - Little Monsters just a couple of doors down from us; two great gift shops - Tesori and Elements; a new store with pet accessories; two antique stores; a Catholic bookstore; Ed's costume and novelty shop; and a terrific running shoe store. And these are all within two blocks of our shop. I'll be doing as much shopping as possible right here - with no shipping charges! Consider the businesses in your community - how can you support them with your holiday purchases?
