Greetings!
This is the weekend! The 5th Annual Shop Hop is this Saturday. Click on the link to learn more, but here are some of the basics: there are five shops participating, we all have extended our hours for the day - we'll be open from 9 to 5, get your passport at the first store you visit, receive a gift at each store with a minimum $10 dollar purchase and have your passport validated to be eligible to win one of five $50 gift certificates. Hope to see you Saturday.
PS If you are planning your "route" for the day, it might be helpful to know that the Black Sheep Knitting Guild has rented a bus (yes, BUS). 28 shoppers are arriving at Heritage at 10:30, so you may want to plan accordingly.
PS (again): Don't forget to try the fresh brownies while you are here. Yum! |

| Last week I told you about our new line of handpainted sock yarn, Heritage Heathers. Over the weekend, Christel came back to town for a visit and she couldn't resist jumping into the dye pot. Here's what she came up with. Isn't it pretty?

Sometimes when we buy yarn, if I buy enough we get a sweater from the company. This sweater modeled by Sally (thank you, Sally, for being such a good sport) is wonderfully soft and comfy. In fact, it felt so good on that Sally sent me an email asking me to tell her more about the pattern and yarn requirements.
The yarn is Azapa by Araucania: Fiber: 45% Merino Wool, 30% Alpaca, 15% Silk, 10% Donegal; Yardage: 197; Stitches: 3.5; Needle size: 10. The pattern is from a Jenny Watson book (the book with the pattern has not arrived yet - soon! - but, we should have yardage requirements today or tomorrow so you can get your yarn right away). |

Classes at Thanksgiving . . .
Mini Latvian Mittens - 11/29 A tiny project packed with technique! Learn a bit about the Latvian knitting tradition and make mini mittens suitable for decorating a package, tree, lapel, or even for framing. We'll practice casting on and two different knitted beginnings that you can use on other projects. (The photo shows a penny next to the mittens to give you an idea of the size with which we will be working.)
Tendril Gloves , Friday, 11/28, 10 am to 4 pm. Be the first to knit these wonderfully creative gloves. Knit along with the designer and be introduced to traveling stitches and making fingers. Gloves really are fun to make and not as tedious as you might think. Try your first pair and learn the story behind the pattern as this is one of Jae's original designs and it hasn't even been published yet! Sno Buddies, Saturday, 11/29, 10 am to 4 pm. This class covers some basic techniques and includes a lot of fun. For a very little bit of knitting you learn about shaping and why to choose particular increases and decreases and work in the round. While the pattern calls for these cute snow people to be knit in worsted gauge, more advanced knitters might want to downsize to smaller needles and yarn and make wonderful Christmas tree ornaments. No matter your skill level, you will have fun spending the day with us - away from leftover turkey and football! Another original pattern from a Michigan designer, Knitting at Knoon.

Classes at Christmas . . .
Learn to Weave on a Rigid Heddle Loom, 12/27 - Curious about weaving? The Rigid Heddle is the perfect way to see if you might like this marvelous art form. This class is designed to show you how to prepare your loom for weaving. We'll weave a scarf, discuss color, texture, calculating how much yarn you need and the ins & outs of weaving. You must have your own loom. Sock Change Purse, 12/27 - This very excellent project is much better than making a silk purse out of a sow's ear. It is made with 100% silk hand-painted yarn or patterned sock yarn and is the perfect size to hold your mad-money or your small knitting notions. Learn how to work a sock from the toe up, make a short row heel, and attach the knitting to the purse frame.
Intermediate Rigid Heddle Weaving, 12/28 - Rigid Heddle weaving doesn't have to be plain. We'll play with texture and hand manipulating the threads to create some very cool samples. Start with a warping refresher. We'll work our way through leno, inlay, pick up, hemstitching and other weaving techniques. We'll leave you with ideas for your next exciting rigid heddle project. Must have had beginning rigid heddle class or some prior rigid heddle weaving experience. (You can sign up to take both RH classes and do just fine - in fact, we recommend it because taking this class will reinforce what you learned in the first class.)
Aspen Shawl, 12/28 - This pretty shawl is a fusion of Estonian and Russian lace patterns. The body of the shawl is an unusual combination of garter stitch and stockinette lace. Practice the pattern and work a swatch that incorporates the border. Cast on and get started knitting the full-sized shawl.
12/29 - not a class, but not to be missed: Lunch with Liz, author of Weaving Made Easy

The winter trade show is in January. Since I have been invited to teach Rigid Heddle weaving by Ashford USA, I will be going for the first time in several years. January in San Diego will be a nice break! In addition to teaching, I'll have an opportunity to look at all the new yarns and notions. If there's something you've seen that you've been curious about or feel that we have a gap in our yarn offerings, drop me a note: joan@heritagespinning.com. I'd love to hear from you! Happy Fibering,
Joan Sheridan
