November 7, 2008

Greetings!

November is a really full month at Heritage. Mark your calendar now for:
  • Saturday the 15th is the 5th Annual Shop Hop
  • Our 8th Anniversary Celebration is the 10th - 23rd (more on that next week)
  • Classes at Thanksgiving: Jae is teaching a gloves class and a snowman class and I'm teaching a class on Latvian Mittens.
  • The Knitting Matters Trunk Show is up and all the patterns are here. There are some very nice baby sweaters and Deb's favorite - the "dragon sweater."
  • And, tonight is Girls Night. Join us for knitting, spinning, good conversation and checking out what everyone is working on.
New in the Shop
Heritage HeathersIntroducing Heritage Heathers, the newest member of our handpainted family. This sock yarn comes in a unique form: pre-knitted. We knit the "blanks" with a double strand of yarn at a fairly tight gauge to provide a resist when the blanks are dyed.
In plain English, that means that the yarn isn't dyed all the way through and when unknit, little spots are left behind. When reknit into socks, a lovely heathered effect appears. If you regularly knit two socks at one time, you can knit directly from the blanks. Otherwise, simply unravel the blanks into two balls and cast on for two perfectly identical socks. Click on the image to get a better look. Priced the same as our regular handpainted sock yarn (and the same 90% Superwash, 10% nylon), each blank contains approximately 450 yards of yarn, enough for a pair of average-sized women's socks.

New Samples!

This has been a big week for samples. Check out these three new ones hot off the needles!

The first is a child's sweater from Kids Knitted Sweaters and More by Cabin Fever knit from Lamb's Pride Superwash. This sweater feels great. It passes the itch test (it doesn't itch) and it has a nice heft to it. It is yarn that would make Mrs. Weasly proud!
Red Sweater
The second sample is made in Schaefer Heather. It is a chill chaser. It only takes one skein of yarn, the pattern is free and it rolls up small enough to fit in your purse for those cold conference rooms, doctor's offices and other slightly chilly moments.

Heritage Sheep Logo

The final sample deserves two pictures. It is, I suppose, another chill chaser. This is an Elsebeth Lavold pattern using Baby Llama. It feels great, drapes beautifully and stays on.

Special thanks to Sherry who was conscripted as a model when she stopped in the other day!
Classes

THIS SUNDAY Color Confidence. This is a class for anyone who creates with fiber (or anything else, really). If you'd like to increase your comfort with color and make decision making and project planning easier, take this class with Diane who is also a full-time designer and part-time university teacher. She knows her stuff! 11/9.

Stuffed Mittens. Knit with roving as your second color and make a pair of mittens that defy the wind. 11/9 with Gina.

Classes at Thanksgiving . . .

Latvian MittensMini Latvian Mittens - 11/29 A tiny project packed with technique! Learn a bit about the Latvian knitting tradition and make mini mittens suitable for decorating a package, tree, lapel, or even for framing. We'll practice casting on and two different knitted beginnings that you can use on other projects.

Watch the website for more information on these classes with Jae over Thanksgiving weekend: Snowbuddies (a Knitting at Knoon pattern, pictured below) and Jae's Tendril Gloves, her original pattern.

Classes at Christmas . . .

Learn to Weave on a Rigid Heddle Loom, 12/27 - Curious about weaving? The Rigid Heddle is the perfect way to see if you might like this marvelous art form. This class is designed to show you how to prepare your loom for weaving. We'll weave a scarf, discuss color, texture, calculating how much yarn you need and the ins & outs of weaving. You must have your own loom.

Sock Change PurseSock Change Purse, 12/27 - This very excellent project is much better than making a silk purse out of a sow's ear. It is made with 100% silk hand-painted yarn or patterned sock yarn and is the perfect size to hold your mad-money or your small knitting notions. Learn how to work a sock from the toe up, make a short row heel, and attach the knitting to the purse frame.

Intermediate Rigid Heddle Weaving, 12/28 - Rigid Heddle weaving doesn't have to be plain. We'll play with texture and hand manipulating the threads to create some very cool samples. Start with a warping refresher. We'll work our way through leno, inlay, pick up, hemstitching and other weaving techniques. We'll leave you with ideas for your next exciting rigid heddle project. Must have had beginning rigid heddle class or some prior rigid heddle weaving experience. (You can sign up to take both RH classes and do just fine - in fact, we recommend it because taking this class will reinforce what you learned in the first class.)

Aspen ShawlAspen Shawl, 12/28 - This pretty shawl is a fusion of Estonian and Russian lace patterns. The body of the shawl is an unusual combination of garter stitch and stockinette lace. Practice the pattern and work a swatch that incorporates the border. Cast on and get started knitting the full-sized shawl.

12/29 - not a class, but not to be missed: Lunch with Liz, author of Weaving Made Easy

Our Next Learn to . . . classes:
Learn to Knit: starts in the new year (or learn anytime at Drop In Knitting)
Learn to Tat: next session in the new year
Learn to Spin: starts in February (private lessons by appointment)
Learn to Weave on the Rigid Heddle: 12/27
Learn to Weave: starts 2/5/09

Details on all of these classes on our website.

Addi Click Interchangeable Needle System
Addi CLickYou may have heard about the Addi needle system due out this fall. I just got an email from the US distributor that told us the introduction has been delayed and it is doubtful that it will happen this year. In the meantime, know that it is coming and let us know if you'd like to put your name on one of the first sets we get. Suggested retail on the set is $149.95.

Echo WeaveHandwoven Magazine
I think I've been remiss in mentioning that we've got a project in the current Handwoven magazine. It is an echo weave project that I really had fun doing. This photo is of it on the Handwovenloom (click to enlarge). Stop in and see the finished bench cover - the possibilities with this weave structure are really quite amazing. I've had fun playing with the rest of the warp and am now planning a second project. I'll keep you posted!

Happy Fibering,
