Greetings!
Knitting season is here! Gardens are put to bed and it is cool enough to have a fire. For seasonal knitters, it is definitely time to dust off the needles. How about making yourself a vow this year? No manic knitting for the holidays . . . save knitting for relaxing and don't put pressure on yourself to knit socks for every family member. Knitting should be pleasant, don't you think?
On another note, we have cancelled KnitFlix on the 2nd Saturday of each month because we just haven't had enough people attending. It was fun, tho', so watch the newsletter for at least one and maybe two special KnitFlix evenings over the winter. |

Last week I told you how we've rearranged the store according to the new Armerican yarn standards system. This week I hope I don't confuse you, but I'd like to show you how the British weight system works. It is pretty cool, actually. You may have seen yarn at Heritage or elsewhere that is labeled, "8-Ply," for example. If you look at the yarn closely, you may find that it doesn't have eight plys at all. That is because "8-Ply is describing the weight (diameter) of the yarn.
The British System is "additive." If you put two strands of 4-Ply yarn (sock weight) together, you get the equivalent of an 8-Ply yarn (DK weight a US 3). If you put two strands of 5-ply gansey yarn together, you get a worsted-weight equivalent. The child's vest pictured above (the Captain Tank from Sublime book #613) uses two strands of sock yarn (4-Ply) to achieve a perfect DK (8-Ply) weight. This combination is great for baby/kids knitting because there are lots of DK weight patterns and sock yarn comes in so many varieties and is machine washable. This vest (our newest shop sample) uses Tofutsie yarn held double. It feels sooooo good when knit at this density. I want a sweater for myself made from it. Cozy!!! |
| Island Knitting Retreats |
|
I stopped sponsoring retreats at Insel Haus because Christa - the owner of the B&B - is now doing it herself. Okay, so I was also exhausted from schlepping food to the island, but it seemed like a good time for Christa to take over and even expand the offerings. She has done that and has retreats listed on her website ( www.yarndreamer.com). I'll be teaching at two of the retreats: · January 2 - 4- 2009, Fair Isle Knitting, · April 3 - 5 - 2009, Cat Bordhi Socks. Both of these are "fly in" worshops because the ferry won't be running. Catch a small plane (6-seater) from Cheboygan (which is not that much more expensive than bringing your car over on the ferry). I LOVE being on the island in the winter. It is so quiet. There's a little element of "danger" involved - you might be stranded by weather. If the plane can't fly you have no choice but to snuggle in, enjoy the fire, and knit some more! Plus, there are usually animals in the meadow that provide live entertainment.
Another thing about the retreats has changed. I allowed up to 20 people to attend (a couple times we had even more), but Christa puts a cap at 11. You'll get personal attention in classes and not have to stand in line so long at dinner time. Whether it is a personal get-a-way or you are with a group of friends, time on Bois Blanc Island is always special.
Oh yes, the photo. That is Christel enjoying the beautiful weather on a recent retreat. |
