Greetings!

Thanks to all who participated in our 4th Annual Fiber Art Show to raise funds for breast cancer research at the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center. We had more entries than in any previous year and raised nearly $1400. A HUGE thank you to the vendors listed at left who generously provided prizes for our winners. Here's a photo of Anneliese modeling her award-winning double knit vest (made on size ZERO needles!) and some of those who attended the award ceremony last Friday. More photos and words on our blog (link at left).

This week's new yarn: More Sock Yarn
If any more sock yarn comes in the front door, I think that the staff will probably disown me! I believe this shipment is it for awhile (until we get our next Tofutsie Sock Club!). Our Lana Grossa shipment arrived with some very pretty sock yarns, only some of which are pictured below. The rainbow-y group are traditional sock weight, the BIG skein IS big. It is 6 ply yarn (knit it on 2s or 3s) and weights in at 150 gm (that's over 5 oz of yarn!). The photo of two small skeins is of note because it is the first sock yarn we've ever had that has a small cashmere content. Feels good. Don't just think socks - think machine washable shawl.

Book Review: Essential Knits for Kids
Essential Knits for KidsDebbie Bliss recently published a new knitting book with children in mind - those from 2 to 5 years of age. The book is organized into four sections: knitting basics,  Down Time, Special Time and Time Out. Downtime includes comfy wear, a blanket, pillows and a doll. Special Time has fancier items including a striped tie for the young man in your life! Time Out has great warm wooly outside sweaters and gear for school.

A couple of the things I like about the organization of the book is that the table of contents includes photos of every project and that there is an equal number of projects suitable for boys and girls. I can see my grandson in the hoodie on page 124 that incorporates just a few cables.

Besides the usual great pictures in Debbie Bliss books, the patterns are very easy to read with lots of white space. One drawback of this book is that the yarns are all from her yarn lines, but equivalents are easily found. This book is a great addition to the library of anyone who knits for children.
Classes

CORRECTION: The Fish Sweater. Starts 10/11 (not 10/18 as stated in the last newsletter). Ann, our instructor writes: Are you tired of knitting scarves and dishcloths?  Ready for something new but intimidated by the technique?  Why not make a fish sweater!  That's right, a sweater for a fish.  Well, not really......The fish sweater is a sampler, designed to help you learn and get comfortable with several techniques including shaping, button holes, I - cords, bind-offs...too many to list.  We will even cut (gasp!) your knitting and add a pocket.  For me, the fish sweater helped me start to 'understand' my knitting, and gave me the confidence to branch out into different projects.  Stop by the shop and check out the sample!

Spinning Boot Camp II starts 10/18. Have you signed up? We're going to have fun playing with all kinds of non-wool fibers!

It is not too late to register (but there is a tiny bit of work to do before class). Visiting instructor Beth Brown-Reinsell, author of Knitted Ganseys will be here for two classes:

Saturday, October 11, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Maine Mittens.

Sunday, October 12, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Norwegian Mittens.

Focus on Fair Isle starts 10/11.

Sampler Afghan, meets on the first Sunday afternoon of each month starting in October. This is from a Leisure Arts book - a sample is on display in our sitting room.

Undulating Waves Scarf 10/18.
