SHINAS WINES
Judge Shinas' presentation of his wines frankly exceeded our expectation and we blew through our supply of the Viognier, Shiraz, Cabernet and the blend. More is on order, but amounts will be limited, as this is a very small production winery. And therein lies the secret - our experience is that the small producers can more carefully tend to the vineyard and production processes ... and make superior wines.

"BEST VALUE" WINES, VOL. I
We were asked to present a series of seminars at the recent Blowing Rock Food and Wine Festival, including two sold-out classes on "Best Value Wines from around the World." Not surprising, since these days everyone is looking for more for less. Having compiled for the classes a list of over 30 wines rated 90 points or higher that are available from Erick's for less than $20, we thought we'd include a few of each of these wines in upcoming newsletters. Here's the initial offering, all Spanish gems imported by Eric Solomon, who always ranks at the top of any list of importers bringing in wines of exceptional quality and value:
2009 Burgans Albariņo (Spain, $14.99). Here's a shimmering, mouth-wateringly crisp white that begs for seafood. Wine Advocate 90 points: "The 2009 Albarino is light gold-colored with a lovely bouquet of white flowers, hazelnut, peach pit, and mineral. On the palate it is surprisingly complex for its bargain price with a viscosity bordering on opulence. If you enjoy Albarino, this is one to buy by the case. Burgans' Albarino is an annual Best Buy in this journal but the superb 2009 vintage in Rias Baixas has carried it to new heights."
2006 Bodegas Almansonas "La Huella de Adaras" (Spain, $11.99). (60% Tintorera, 30% Monastrell and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon). From Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (90 points): "Opaque ruby. High-pitched cherry and dark berry aromas are complicated by smoky bacon, rose oil, anise and minerals. Fresh and juicy, offering sweet raspberry and boysenberry flavors along with a bright mineral undertone. Finishes fresh, clean and precise, with very good persistence This wine, which saw no oak, was made by Ester Nin, who is the cellarmaster at Clos Erasmus. Great value."
2006 Creta Roble (Spain, $16.99). (100% Tempranillo from the Ribera del Duoro
region.) Wine Advocate 90+ points: "The 2006 Roble is sourced from a single vineyard at 850 meters of elevation, the highest vineyard in Ribera del Duero. The wine was aged for 4 to 5 months in French and American oak. Purple/black in color, the nose reveals cedar, mineral, damp earth, and assorted black fruits. Powerful on the palate, this tannic, structured effort has superb depth and grip and should evolve for 3-4 years. Drink it from 2011 to 2020."
