TASTING AUG 7, 1-5 PM
SATURDAY TASTING SATURDAY'S SAMPLES Saturday's tasting theme is "No Italian Wines." We'll putt corks from bottles of some Spanish, French and California wines we found around the shop that deserve the spotlight. 2007 Manifesto Sauvignon Blanc (Suisun Valley, California, $14.99). "Simple wine for a complex world" is winemaker Jamey Whetstone's credo. Fun and simple Sauvignon Blanc made for easy pairing or enjoyed on its own. Big citrus aromatics and a real vibrancy on the palate. 2009 Domaine Houchart Rosé (Provence, France, $14.99). Imagine yourself on a Bougainvillea-wrapped patio in Provence, gazing out over a field of lavender, sipping on a wine. It would certainly be a dry rosé, and you could hardly beat this one. (A blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvedre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah). As Steve Tanzer says (89 points): "Light, bright pink. High-pitched aromas of wild strawberry, jasmine and chalky minerals. A nervy citrus note underscores fresh red fruits on the palate, with subtle floral and herbal qualities adding nuance. The refreshingly brisk leaves behind a dry orange pith note. This drinks well all by itself." 2009 Bodegas Luzon Luzon Verde (Jumilla, Spain, $9.99). One of our best sellers for the third straight year. Wine Advocate 88 points: "The 2009 Luzon Verde was produced from organically grown grapes and is 100% Monastrell from 15- to 35-year-old vines. Dark ruby-colored, the nose offers up earth, spice, underbrush, and blueberry. Ripe, sweetly-fruited, and firm, it will deliver pleasure over the next 4 years." 2007 Cambell Cellars (Rogue Valley, Oregon, $13.99, or 2-for-$20). Are you kidding me - could this be any good? Well, it's our best-selling Pinot Noir, a "second" wine of Foris Vinyards from the Rogue Valley in Oregon. They don't want you to know it's theirs because they don't want you buying this instead of their "Foris" Pinot Noir. But come see for yourself whether this smooth-as-silk deeply flavored Pinot Noir deserves its "sleeper" reputation. For a $5 donation to the Avery County Humane Society, we'll pour you a fabulous Bordeaux-style blend, the 2006 Donati Claret (somewhere east of Salinas in San Benito County, California, $24.99). This is the fourth vintage of the Donati Family's flagship wine. It's dominated by Cab, but with complementary additions of Merlot, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine's nose features dark red and black fruit and lots of spice.
