COME IN AND TASTE THESE WINES ON SATURDAY, DEC 19, 1 to5 PM
Wines from the state of Washington will be on display this Saturday. We will pour a diverse sampling from two producers with which you may not yet be familiar but which deserve to be on a West Coast lover's radar screen. Interestingly, the producers are militantly anti-ratings and do not submit their wines for ratings, so coming up with scores and critics' comments was impossible. Rather than prejudice you, we'll let you come and taste and grade them yourself. You might want to buy a few and take home to see if your initial impressions stand up! However, to soften you up and get you in the holiday (i.e., buying) spirit, we'll ply you with a wonderful Champagne (this wine for only $5, to benefit the Avery County Humane folks and their four-legged clientele).
Complimentary
2006 Hedges Red Mountain "Three Vineyards" ($31.99). The Flagship of their estate wines, the Three Vineyards is a classic Red Mountain wine showing deep, dense color, firm yet supple tannins, and well defined acidity. The Three Vineyards is a blend of fruit from three estate vineyards: Hedges Estate Vineyard, Bel'Villa Vineyard and Red Mountain Vineyard. This wine is comprised of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Merlot. 2008 Hedges "CMS" Red ($14.99). Stands for Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah, of course. Aromas of dark cherry, cassis, with hints of tar, tobacco, and sweet vanilla toast. Black cherry and blackberry fruit continue on the palate with dried herbs and licorice. A nicely balanced wine with enough acidity and tannins for extended longevity that pairs nicely with a wide array of foods. 2008 Sunset Road Vintners Chardonnay ($12.99). The aromas are themed around crisp apple and soft lemon lime and the flavors follow suit with a citrus, golden apple, and lemon meringue. 2007 Sunset Road Vintners "Independent Producers Merlot" ($12.99). Independent Producers is a versatile, food-friendly and flat-out delicious single-vineyard Merlot. Surprisingly multidimensional, it has lovely notes of raspberry, blackberry tart and earth.
Donation $5.00
Nv Besserat de Bellefont Rosé "Cuvée de Moines" (Champagne, $74.99). No idealistic, non-rating seeker they, this producer shamelessly and obsequiously submitted their wine for ratings not only to Steve Tanzer but also to Wine Spectator! (However, they showed a modicum of integrity by refraining from begging points from Robert Parker.) Since Tanzer rated it more highly (90) than Spectator (89), we'll give you the Tanzer notes: "Salmon skin color. Fresh peach, apricot and raspberry aromas are bright and pure. Firm and well-focused, with brisk, tangy redcurrant and wild strawberry flavors, a firm mineral backbone and serious concentration. Elegant and precise, with vivid red berry and mineral tones on the long finish. I like this style of rose a lot." |
