COME IN AND TASTE THESE WINES ON SATURDAY, DEC 5, 1-5 PM
Complimentary
We hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. Now, the rush is on
to Christmas! Ray's Weather Center is forecasting some white stuff this weekend, so come on up to the High Country and enjoy the winter wonderland and get in the mood, and be sure to stop by Erick's and enjoy a few sips at our wine tasting and drive away the chill. Here's what you can expect:
2007 Napa Cellars Chardonnay (Napa, $25.99). Here's a pretty wine from a virtual winery - no vineyards to get in the way or overload the capital budget. They just go out and buy the best grapes they can find and hire a winemaker with lots of experience to produce a quality wine at a reasonable price. The wine features notes of nectarine, oak, caramel, buttery hints, tropical fruits, honey, oak, citrus blossom, oak, buttery palate, butter, pear, apple, oak, apple, banana, oak. And more oak and butter. (Recommended for oaky, buttery Chardonnay lovers!) 2007 Evergreen Riesling (Willamette Valley, Oregon, $19.99). Typical for a Riesling, this slightly off-dry wine displays a light yellow color and a light body. The bouquet features pears and melons, and the palate is smooth. 2005 Celler de Capįanes "Mas Donis" Barrica (Penedes, Spain, $13.99).PRICE REDUCED It's been a long time since we poured Mas Donis on Saturday, but with so many phenomenal values coming out of Spain, it's gotten overlooked. Pity, since it still holds the mark for the single largest-selling red wine since we introduced it to our customers soon after we bought the business. Always a favorite and highly rated, this vintage was no exception, rated 91 points by Wine Advocate: "Mas Donis Barrica is a custom cuvee made for importer Eric Solomon using old-vine Garnacha (80+ years) and Syrah (30+ years). The 2005 Mas Donis Barrica is 85% Garnacha and 15% Syrah aged for 8 months in French and American oak before bottling without fining or filtration. It offers up an expressive nose of slate, mineral, licorice, violets, black cherry, and blueberry." 2006 Tikal "Patriota" (Mendoza, Argentina, $18.99). We touted this wine several weeks ago but didn't open it up for you to try, so we've decided to do it Saturday. This producer is owned by Ernesto Cateņa of the renowned Argentine wine family. The blend of this wine, rated 92 by Wine Advocate, is fascinating, with the 60% Bonarda adding crispness, lift and edge to the normally soft 40% Malbec. At the same time, it contains the stunning rich fruit for which Mendoza is known -- juicy and ripe, with delicious berry flavors (blueberry, raspberry, blackberry and boysenberry nuances shine through). It also features spice and toast notes and a rich finish. Steve Tanzer adds: "Nicely sappy wine with firm but fine tannins and very good length and lift." This is an excellent no-brainer value proposition - the wine was released at $25, and the restaurant at which I enjoyed this wine charged $65 for it, and I was not shocked until I found out we could buy and sell this wine for under $20! Donation And for our paid selection for the Avery County Humane Society, we offer the 2004 Bodegas Hornillos Ballesteros Mibal Seleccion (Ribera del Duero, Spain, $37.99). What were we saying about Spanish wine? From The Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Mibal Seleccion is a barrel selection of the best lots and spent 14 months in French oak. It further raises the bar with its saturated, glass-coating purple color, super-expressive, exotic nose of pain grille, spice box, wild blueberry, smoked meat, and licorice. On the palate, this thick and opulent wine has gobs of spicy black fruit flavors, enough structure for 4-6 years of further evolution, and a beautifully delineated, long finish. It should drink well through 2020." |
