CELEBRATING THIRTY YEARS
COME IN AND TASTE THESE WINES ON SATURDAY, OCT 10, 1-5 PM

Complimentary

2007 Sumarroca Brut Reserva (Penedes, Spain, $16.99).  Bubbly lovers know there's no better value in méthod traditionelle sparkling wine than Spanish Cava, and here's another example from the usual blend of Parellada, Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Chardonnay.  In the Reserva, only 50% of the first estate juice is used.  The nose has bright aromas with a slight suggestion of brioche from its second (in the bottle) fermentation.  On the palate, it's soft, fine and elegant with a long finish.

2007 Valckenberg Riesling "Undone" (Rheinhessen, $14.99).   No professional reviews of this wine yet, but here's a composite tasting note from all the CellarTracker subscribers who've tried this wine (avg. score 85 pts.): aromatic nose of apple, pear and honeysuckle, lemon, pineapple, trace of orange, fairly high acidity, balanced by the fruit.  Mmmmm.

2007 Menguante Garnacha (Aragon, Spain, $12.99).  Rated 87 points by Wine Advocate (no tasting notes, but Wine Spectator says: "Cherry and leafy flavors mingle in this light, fresh red. It has light tannins and a clean finish, where a hint of bitter herb adds interest.")

2006 Kaesler Stonehorse GSM (Barossa Valley, Australia, $24.99).  Wine Advocate 90+ points:  "The 2006 Stonehorse Shiraz was aged for 15 months in a mix of new and used French and American oak. A saturated purple color, it emits an enticing aromatic array of balsam wood, spice box, blueberry, and black cherry. Dense and rich on the palate, it has the structure and fruit to evolve for 1-2 years and should be in its prime from 2010 to 2018."

With a $5.00 donation to the Avery County Humane Society, you can also taste: The the 2005 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin (Burgundy, $54.99).  Allen Meadows of Burghound has rated this wine 88-90 points:  "Ripe and earthy red fruit and violet aromas introduce rich, full, sweet and amply ripe flavors that culminate in a linear and detailed finish. There is good concentration and fine complexity here plus the tannins are clearly ripe. A superior villages and recommended."

CHATEAU CARBONNIEUX

One of THE best white Bordeaux, year in, year out, is Château Carbonnieux blanc.  That was certainly the case for the 2005 vintage from this property, located 10 or so kilometers south of the city of Bordeaux on the left bank on the Garonne River in the Graves appellation of Pessac-Léognan.  Interestingly, the white wine of Carbonnieux (Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle) has always outshined the red and, like red Bordeaux, is very long-lived and has often outlived its red sibling.

The vineyards and its wine can be traced to the 13th century, making it one of Bordeaux's most historical châteaux.  It was not until the mid-1980s, however, that the property changed hands and inspired vineyard management and winemaking took Carbonnieux to the next level - among the best in Bordeaux.

2005 Château Carbonnieux blanc (Pessac-Léognan, $44.99) .  Based on scores by Robert Parker, the 2005 vintage is the best ever for this wine, rated 93 points:  "Beautiful aromas of white peaches, crushed rocks, candle wax, and lemon rind along with a touch of quince emerge from this medium-bodied, crisp, flavorful effort. Excellent acidity as well as a long finish suggest it will drink well for 10-15+ years."  Enjoy it now or cellar it, but don't miss the 2005 Carbonnieux blanc.
