COME IN AND TASTE THESE WINES ON SATURDAY, OCT 3, 1-5 PM
Complimentary
2008 KitFox Vineyards Foxy White (California, $12.99). This refreshing white wine is made from every white wine grape the winemaker could get his hands on -- Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Orange Muscat, Riesling, Viognier and Gewurztraminer. (secret recipe?) With this fruitbasket of grapes, you would expect a mélange of smells and tastes, and that's what you get. This elegant white wine has bright fruit notes of ripe pear and citrus blossoms on the nose. On the palette there are succulent flavors of white peaches, apricot, pineapple and honeydew. An inexpensive version of "Conumdrum" 2007 Husch Vineyards Gewurztraminer (Anderson Valley, California, $13.99). Founded in 1971, Husch Vineyards is the oldest winery in the Anderson Valley in northern California. Its cool climate is ideal for growing Gewurtztraminer, whose ancestral home is near the Alps in northeastern Italy. This off-dry offering has intense floral aromas of rose petal and honeysuckle, coupled with the subtle perfume of ginger and green tea, and flavors of spice, citrus, melon and lychee-nut. 2005 Abundance Vineyards Petite Sirah (Lodi, $16.99). Abundance Vineyards, a family-owned winery operated by the Mencarini family for over a half century, produces a range of value-oriented wines. According to Dino Mencarini, "My vision of the winery,' Dino explains, "is to give the average working person a high quality wine for an affordable price." Perfect for the recession! This is such a wine, plenty of flavors of blackberries and bing cherries, with a touch of mocha. And a nice price too. 2007 Elk Cove Vineyards Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley, Oregon, $32.99). Family-owned and operated since 1977, Elk Cove produces elegant Pinot Noirs scoring in the low-90s. Though not yet reviewed, the 2007 vintage is cut from the same mold - rich, ripe cherry and raspberry with excellent balance and bright acidity.
With a $5.00 donation to the Avery County Humane Society, you can also taste: The 2006 Andrew Will Meritage Red Wine, Champoux Vineyard Horse Heaven Hills (Washington State, $69.99). Wine Spectator 92 points: "Firm, with a tart balance to the bright raspberry and brooding black fruit flavors. A distinctive minerally note emerges nicely on the expressive finish. Needs time to soften. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot."

ATTENTION MALBEC LOVERS Most Malbec lovers associate the wine with Argentina, and, indeed, it is that country's signature red wine. However, Malbec began its life in France, where it was used as a Bordeaux blending grape, where it was used to add color, tannins and plumy nuances to the wines. Most of the Malbec vines were killed off by frost in 1956 and were not replanted there because it was such a difficult grape to grow in that region due to cool and wet climate, so few Bordeaux contain any Malbec today. However, it was less of a problem to grow Malbec in Cahors, to the southwest, so the vines were replanted there and it is that region's signature grape, where AC Cahors wines must contain at least 70% of that variety. Malbecs from Cahors have more tannin than Malbecs from Argentina and accordingly, are more Bordeaux-like in their structure and longevity. If you're unfamiliar with how the native soils of Cahors present this noble grape, here's a golden opportunity, and the best price/quality Cahors we've ever seen is our wine deal of the week. 2006 Mas de Perie Cahors Malbec, ($16.99), rated 91 points by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Marie-Rose Ortalo has crafted a sensational value 2006 Cahors Malbec (yes, the grape is literally given top billing on the label) that smells of ripe blackberries and cherries, young saddle leather, cocoa, and cardamom. The anticipation of richness in the aromas is not disappointed on the palate, but the wine's lithe, bright, smoothly polished, and relatively light-weight impression (it's labeled 12.5% alcohol) comes as something of a surprise, and ultimately a delight. A myriad of nuances - black tea, cardamom, tart berry skins, spruce resin, white pepper, and citrus oil - well up and are carried into a long, soothing finish. You won't encounter many reds nowadays with this combination of richness, subtlety, and the sort of elegance that was once encapsulated in the term "claret," and you certainly won't find very many of them at a price like this!"
